It started on a fine evening. A Sunday ! I was watching my cousin brother riding his cycle. He came towards me. I tried to stop his cycle holding on the handle. The front tyre stopped hitting my right toe. I did not feel anything at that moment. After few days I felt my right toe numb, without any feeling. My father took me to the doctor. The doctor found out the nail was jammed. The doctor prescribed antibiotic medicine. The first course of medicine did not heal the jammed right toe. So he prescribed one more course of the same medicine. There started my court-ship with Peptic ulcer. The right toe got healed. But something started next. I had severe abdomen pain and I frequently went to the loo. My mother asked me to have bland food and skip spices and milk. That also turned out to be a failure. I even hesitated to have food. So my mother asked me to have a health drink mixed in plain water. That also did not help. When I went to the doctor he looked at me with suspicious eyes and asked me if I were having any spicy food without the knowledge of my mother. I told him 'no'. But he did not believe. Days went on. I restricted my food. I started to have very bland food that will not upset my stomach. Slowly, I started to feel weak. I lost weight. Already I looked so thin. This aggravated it. When I joined my under graduation I used to take only plain rice with buttermilk. Everyone will be having spicy, delicious food. I remember, I would beg my friends for a mouthful of the food in their lunch boxes. No one gave me and forced me to eat from my lunch box.

A day turned out to be a turning point. My mother asked me to have some specific greens and a particular soup that would help the ulcer to heal. I stopped having chillies in my food and added pepper to my diet. But that also in a small quantity. I even remember the days. When I was having severe stomach pain, I felt my abdomen to be so hot. I would take red soil at home and mix with water. I would apply this paste on my lower abdomen and wait till that dried up. It would absorb the heat from the abdomen and made me feel cool.

Arrgghh! Sorry about the ulcer, matie. A pain in the gut, ay? ;o) I'm lucky to never have developed one, though I know there's a class of antibiotics that really doesn't go well with my stomach at all. Hope you continue to be successful in managing this! :o)
