A couple of weeks ago, I amassed a list of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL today based on results and potential.

I have gathered up stats and facts about several of the NFL’s elite quarterback throughout football history. Basically, the quarterbacks were ranked by stats and efficiency. Other accomplishments such as Super Bowl wins, Pro Bowl appearances, and MVP awards were taken into consideration, but they do not eclipse actual stats.

1. Dan Marino: Dan Marino was a first-round draft pick for the Miami Dolphins in 1983. He went to college at Pittsburgh. He spent seventeen seasons as quarterback of the Miami Dolphins and broke almost every passing record possible. His arm strength and accuracy was consistently among the elite throughout his illustrious career. Despite breaking records and producing phenomenal stats, Dan Marino has had to carry around the encumbrance of being known as the best quarterback not to win the Super Bowl. His legacy and place among past quarterbacks will be in question because of his lack of post-season success. Arguably, if Marino had won just a single Super Bowl, then he would be documented as the greatest quarterback ever to play football, similar to how Michael Jordan has been hailed as the greatest basketball player of all-time. But his stats alone state that not only is he the best quarterback not to win the Super Bowl, but he is the best quarterback ever to grace the gridiron.

Marino played in 242 NFL regular season games, completed 4,967 out of 8,358 pass attempts, threw for 61,361 yards, threw 420 touchdown passes and 252 interceptions. Marino has made nine appearances in the Pro Bowl, and won the MVP award in 1984.

Young was a much better rusher than Mike Vick

Yeah Chris, you heard him right.... Vick has to be in top 10 best QB's of all time convo (note the number 10). Simply because of how he revolutionized the position. You look at the great passers like Marino, Montana, and Elway and you have to consider their supporting cast. The Falcons have consistently put Vick in a one option position, pass to Crumpler or scramble. Look out for the new breed of QB's that will rewrite the record books by adding new stat colums.

Did someone actually say michael vick was the best qb of all time? Michael vick is nothing more than a product of the media who wants to see "steaming willy beamon" out there. Michael vick was a sorry passer and had pathetic passing statistics and yes quarterbacks are measured on overall passing statistics as well. Michael vick was a good runningback, but nothing more than that.

Uhm, how is joe montana not the unanimous no 1? He was the most accurate and don't forget his career started in the early 80's and he was one of the first qb's to really post high qb ratings. Yes he played with rice but rice didn't even become a great player till 87 and steve young for all his stats has one lousy super bowl ring to show for it on a team that should have won more.

Brett Fave cuz he was a tuff guy and played through a lot of pain and grief at times. He never gave up

john elway and brett favre played the same amount of seasons, and yes favre has 62 more interceptions but he also has 10,000 more yards, 142 more touchdowns, 2 more MVPs a career quarterback rating thats about 6 higher, and 12 more wins. john elway was great and i dont think favre is number 1, or even 2 but i think hes better than elway. as to the idea that favre has the records cause he played long enough, but he played one less year than the man he passed dan marino, and the same amount as john elway, and in one more year than joe montana he had 20,000 more yards, the interception is a huge knock on him, but his quarterback rating is .7 lower than dan marino, so yes he is amazing, is he the best probably not, top five yes

Yeah all the records.....including most interceptions in league history. Which we will allways remember him for as he through a pick in the last play of his carreer blowing a chance at the superbowl. Basically most of his records are just the result of being around for so long not for being great. Most consecutive starts. Most attempted passes. Yeah he's nothing amazing. A good classy guy, but c'mon.

Editing the last post: Only retired QB are on the list, not projected greats (Peyton Manning).

#1- Brett Favre- Holds just about every NFL QB Record, 1 Superbowl Win, 2 Visits, He had Sterling Sharpe and Donald Driver (and this past year Greg Jennings), but he was the greatest gunslinger in football. #2- Dan Marino- Held most of the records before Favre broke them... Greatest QB to never win a Superbowl, The Equivalent of Brett Favre to the Miami Dolphins. #3- John Elway- The Ultimate Clutch QB: 49 career 4th Quarter Comebacks, Could Scramble like hell, Carried his team until he got help in the late 1990's, 2 Superbowl wins, 5 visits. #4- Joe Montana- Yes he did have 4 superbowl wins, but he had Jerry Rice, The Greatest WR of All time, who produced with Steve Young as well. Still, you can't deny those 4 superbowl wins. #5- Johnny Unitas- 47 game Touchdown Streak... wow. 0/3 on Superbowl wins, was knocked out early in all of them. Only Retired QB on the list.
