Who Are the Five Greatest Quarterbacks in NFL History?
Other suggested readings: "Top Five NFL Quarterbacks," by Eric Williams and "Top Five NFL Safeties of All - time".A couple of weeks ago, I amassed a list of the top five quarterbacks in the NFL as of today, based on results and potential.
I have gathered up stats and facts about several of the NFL's elite quarterbacks throughout football history. Basically, the quarterbacks were ranked by stats and efficiency. Other accomplishments such as Super Bowl wins, Pro Bowl appearances, and MVP awards were taken into consideration, but they do not eclipse actual stats.
1. Dan Marino: Dan Marino was a first-round draft pick for the Miami Dolphins in 1983. He went to college at Pittsburgh. He spent seventeen seasons as quarterback of the Miami Dolphins and broke almost every passing record possible. His arm strength and accuracy was consistently among the elite throughout his illustrious career. Despite breaking records and producing phenomenal stats, Dan Marino has had to carry around the encumbrance of being known as the best quarterback not to win the Super Bowl. His legacy and place among past quarterbacks will be in question because of his lack of post-season success. Arguably, if Marino had won just a single Super Bowl, then he would be documented as the greatest quarterback ever to play football, similar to how Michael Jordan has been hailed as the greatest basketball player of all-time. But his stats alone state that not only is he the best quarterback not to win the Super Bowl, but the best quarterback ever to grace the gridiron.
Marino played in 242 NFL regular season games, completed 4,967 out of 8,358 pass attempts, and threw for 61,361 yards, threw 420 touchdown passes and 252 interceptions. Marino made nine appearances in the Pro Bowl, and won the MVP award in 1984.

Manning and Marino didnt win games when it counted. One superbowl against the bears isnt much records dont madder if you dont have the rings.

You must be if you don't have Brady on this page anywhere? I love Jim Kelly, but the guy let the big games get to him. Brady didn't and that has to count for something.

Manning has a significantly better passer rating,completion percentage,TD percentage,INT percentage and yards per game.Every reasonable stat Manning has over Marino even the illrelavant super bowl wins.

I don't know or I don't really care who is reading this. You can't really say that ayone quarterback was better than Joe Montana. Before him was Terry Bradshaw. That's all I gott'a say !

brett favre definitely has the most heart and passion for the game, but only won 1 super bowl. peyton manning's is definitely the best quarterback of all time, not to mention he has thrown for over 4,000 yards in a season nine or ten times, which is the most ever. at the age of 33, he looks like he can go on for a very long time, and as long as jeff saturday is center, this will add years to manning's career, because he won't take as many hits as favre or brady do. please not that i am not a colts fan. i am a vikings fan

peyton manning has to be the best of all time. he is changing the way that the qb position is being played. he is a coach on the field, and can make completions even when his receivers are covered. he was never blessed with a good defense that could bail him out of tight spots (like how tom brady was during his super bowl years). the reason the colts is consistently rated so highly is because of manning's ability to orchestrate 7-8 minute drives with grace and excellence. he can seriously play with any receivers and make them look better than they really are. when he beats the saints he should undoubtedly be the greatest of all time. remember that even though montana won more superbowls, montana had jerry rice, who was the ultimate upper echelon receiver. Rice was a in a class of his own. The only more athletic receiver we have ever seen play has to be randy moss, but moss does not have the longevity that rice had. as for dan marino, he never won anything so he can't be considered. bre

RE: Martin's comment on Marino's mobility...Marino had magic feet in the pocket...he made oncoming defenders look downright foolish time and time again..It wasn't just that brilliant release..opinion is one thing..but you're just plain wrong..

I agree with Ron, Unitas was something else to watch. Most all your modern era QBs are from his style of football. Joe Montana was asked once if he was the best, he said no, Unitas was the best. Now this is Montana saying this!! Besides Unitas was probably the only QB to take a nap on Game Day!! There will never be another 19, but 18 is doing him proud!!!!!!

Dan Marino The BEST EVER...alot of great Quarterbacks over the years..but no one out does Danny...as for the detractors that mention his mobility...you didn't really watch Dan. Most REAL football experts credited Danny's feet nearly on par w/ his incredible arm. NFL Quarterbacks aren't intended to run up and down the field..(highly over-rated and not effective in the the long run), but it's an absolute necessity to feel the rush and avoid sacks..and then make a play downfield..This is something Marino did as well if not better than anyone who ever played the game..just ask Bruce Smith..or half a dozen other hall of fame de-linemen....

If you look at the QBs that are considered historically the best, all have had a strong running game, and a top receiver to work with. In Tom Brady's 3 championships, he has never had a dominant running back (or running game), nor a top receiver, ever, to work with. He has taken whomever he has been given, and has made them champions. Only 4 QBs have ever one 3 super bowls. Tom Brady is one of them. Not considering Tom Brady to be a top 5 ever to play the game is unfathomable.
