Ageless Mark Brunell to Back Up Campbell Again

Jason Campbell will be the starting quarterback for the Washington Redskins entering camp this season and will be given every chance to prove he deserves it. Campbell played decently last
season in his role as starter but did not blow anyone away. He was simply okay for the most part. This season he will be able to prepare for the season and start day one with the knowledge that he is the man for the Skins.

Campbell certainly has some tools at his disposal, and should be able to improve on last year's numbers. He is an intelligent quarterback with a penchant for throwing the interception and forcing the ball. These are rookie mistakes that should be expected and he will get better with this. One thing that hurt Campbell last season was the fact that Clinton Portis, the Redskins star running back, was injured. Campbell never got the opportunity to have a running game behind him. Given the fact that he is a pocket passer, this really hurt him as far as keeping the defense off balance. Portis is ready to go this season, so that will certainly take off a lot of the pressure.

Mark Brunell, the ageless wonder, will back up Campbell again this season. When called upon, Brunell is capable and confident. He can still explode for some serious numbers and many in Washington feel the move to Campbell was premature. In the long run, the Redskins made the right decision. Brunell is much better at his age coming in as a relief type quarterback. Given a string of starts, he would start to break down as his age is catching up to him. His experience and leadership on the bench is invaluable.

Another ageless quarterback on the Washington bench is Todd Collins. He is listed third on the depth chart and in a pinch could fill the position as well. Collins is more of a mentor type and he helps Campbell with the emotions of being a NFL quarterback as well.

With an improved running game, expect Campbell to evolve this season into an efficient, and capable quarterback. He should excel this season if injuries do not bite the Redskins yet again.

Nice article.
:-)
Good Article. However two things to point out: When Clinton Portis went down with a broken hand in week 9 of last season, the Running never faltered with Ladell Betts. Campbell had a good ground game with Betts who rushed for over 1,100 yards in 7 games. Also, dont count on Brunell to be the backup to Campbell this season. Todd Collins may get the No. 2 spot while Brunell gets shipped to Atlanta.
