I started on Cymbalta for anxiety and depression about 2 years ago. After having been on this antidepressant for a while it was decided by myself and my doctor that it was time to try living life again without an antidepressant.

Simple right? Not so. I was told by my psychiatrist that I would need to ween off of Cymbalta "just to be on the safe side". I was advised to first decrease my dose by half. I went from taking 40mg of Cymbalta daily down to 20mg per day. To my surprise, even this initial decrease in the dose left my body with pretty severe withdrawal symptoms.

What The Hell Are Brain Zaps?

If you have never heard of something called brain zaps...you are lucky. This phenomena dubbed "brain zaps" by it's unfortunate sufferers it's exactly what it sounds like. The sensation of an electrical zap in your brain which occurs frequently throughout the day. Imagine feeling like you have an electrical current that periodically zaps your brain throughout the day. It's enough to make you feel like you are going insane.

Some Other Common Cymbalta Withdrawal Symptoms

Along with the brain zaps one can expect to have a wide range of Cymbalta withdrawal symptoms. These include flu like symptoms with body aches, chills, nausea and often times accompanied by diarrhea...fun. Canker sores, swelling of limbs, fluid retention and tingling of extremities are some of the other Cymbalta withdrawal symptoms that people seem to get. On top of your body feeling sick your emotions are way out of whack. Sufferers have described having anxiety, severe enough that they were unable to leave the house, thoughts of suicide, rage, uncontrollable crying and severe sadness.

When you combine the psychological symptoms with the physical symptoms of the Cymbalta withdrawal you can see that this is some serious withdrawal. Obviously the brain chemistry is altered anytime you start taking an antidepressant but Cymbalta seems to be worse than others to come off of. Did I happen to mention that my Cymbalta withdrawal symptoms lasted for 19 days?

I thought I going crazy with the noise in my head. I wasnt trying to get off cymbalta, just missed 3 days , {forgot to refill prescription} I figured out it was the cymbalta. It stopped a few hours after taking it again...but the nausea was back just like in the beginning. This is a scary drug.

I have worked in medicine a very long time, and I know people need something, really something to help them. Unfortunately our society believes that stocking drug companies pockets is the answer, and they (big money) tell us to buy pills for everything. If every single person here that was suffering this horror, could or would revolt against it, we would not have a fast fix bad pill hurting so many people. The pain you are enduring can get better, and I am so very sorry that pills are the reason for all of this pain. I left medicine a long time ago, at least, western medicine, because it is wrong to tell people that a pill, synthetic drug, will help a natural human body.

I am in day 5 of withdrawl and I feel like hell. I thought I was going crazy. I noise in my head is unreal every time I move my head side to side. I feel hopeless and ready to give up. I didn't stop taking cymbalta because I wanted to I stopped because I didn't have the money to fill the rx. Now I am not sure I want to start taking it again. I just want to curl up in a ball and die, but that is not going to happen. I didn't realize what I was feeling was withdrawl until I found this web site.

i'm on week 4 of being cold turkey from cymbalta... i tapered down for a period of 5 days... i was on the drug for 4-5 years... the only benefit i got from taking this drug was that it eventually relieved me of the suicidal thoughts i was having... i was on 90 mg... i do believe the drug did help keep me alive but with horrible consequences from the withdrawal symptoms... all i could find that helped alleviate the withdrawal symptoms were omega-3 fish oil for sudden increase of decrease of blood pressure, B-12 for fatigue, and benadryl for the dizziness and itching...

Was I stupid or what? I had simular side effects going off Paxil 10 years ago, and now I am going off a years worth of Cymbalta and I am so zapped out in my brain I almost took another pill just to stop the suffering! That is untill I found how not alone I am. Oh and the night terrors where I am paralized and monsters in my dream are chewing on my feet and hands while I feel the pain, not one I will forget soon. And in addition I am sick, and my chest is tight. What is this stuff? It did not help me enough for me to go through this. My toung is numb? and mouth zaps with my brain.

I too am in withdrawl--right now in a fit of uncontrolable crying. I'm hot all the time, almost got in a car wreck from the intense migraine (that no matter what over the counter I'm trying won't go away) Every day it's something different. I think Paxil's withdrawl was a cakewalk compared to this.

I totally agree with the comments on this site and appreciate knowing I'm not going insane. I have gone on and off Cymbalta twice now. Off because of debilitating diarrhea caused by the drug--back on b/c of terrible withdrawal side effects, despite weening off the drug, as directed. In the course of my second attempt to get off of it, I am still experiencing horrible dizziness, light-headedness and nausea 10 days after weening myself off of 30MG tablets for 3 weeks. Also, I have noted the hair loss others have described. It is pronounced and alarming and I hope will abate once this drug finally gets out of my system. By the way, I was prescribed this for migraine prevention and it DIDN'T work, so all of this suffering was for nothing. Don't do it!

My doctor had me on 90mg of cymbalta for a while. Started out at 30 was still depressed so he upped it to 60, still depressed than he upped it again to 90. Now I am going thru all of the pain and suffering that all these other people are experiencing on this site trying to taper off. On top of that 2 days ago the right side of my face is drooping and my right eye is smaller than the left. I'm a mess!! I wish I never took this drug!

I WAS ON 240MG OF THIS DRUG. I AM NOW ON 60MG A DAY. I CRY HARD MOST OF THE DAY. I HAVE THE ZAPS IN MY HEAD. I HAVE BEEN ON NEARLY EVERY ANTIDEPRESSANT MADE IN THE LAST 20 YRS. I HAD TO GO OFF IMIPRIMINE COLD TURKEY AFTER THE LAB CALLED ME ONE NIGHT AND SAID MY LEVELS WERE TOXIC. THE VERTIGO, SWEATS, VOMITING AND ANXIETY SEEM TO BE EVEN WORSE WITH THIS DRUG CYMBALTA. I WANT TO RAGE ON SOMEONE. I KNOW I WON'T BUT I'M FEELING SO BETRAYED. I'LL NEVER TAKE ANOTHER ANTIDEPRESSANT IN MY LIFE. THE PAIN OF MY ARTHRITIS IS WORSE. I HAVE THE SORES IN MY MOUTH. MY FIBROMYALGIA PAIN IS UNBEARABLE. I NEED HELP UNDERSTANDING HOW THIS DRUG COULD HAVE BEEN SUGGESTED TO MAKE ME FEEL BETTER.

I was put on this med for peripheral neuropathy, I really think it helped but man is it hard to get it out of your system. Today is only day 3 and I am getting zaps down both hands from time to time and when I move my head quickly I get a zap in my head and I feel off balance. Wonderful. Will keep you guys posted. First time I've ever had a problem with a medication and or withdrawal from it. Not fun, don't take it if you don't have too.

Although I wouldn't wish this on anyone, I must be honest and say it makes me feel better hearing others go through the same experience. Thank you so much for sharing!
