For quite a lot of years I have been treating my body with natural supplements. Many people around me, close family and friends, still do not understand the benefits of taking just one or two simple pills a day. In fact, a lot of people in my life believe it's a waste of time and money. With obese levels rising, it is hard that Americans are not getting enough nutrition, so are they really needed? And yes, people are living longer however studies show that humans are not living healthier and are feeling worse.

It is true that the world does have scam artists and this is still the case with some natural supplements on the market today. Yes, there are multivitamins on grocery store shelves today which are just a good marketing scheme to employ upon innocent people looking to better their health. Throughout the years, I have seen really pricey multivitamins or vitamins on the shelves that had completely nothing to improve ones health. In fact, some of the vitamins were filled with so many chemicals that it did not even contain the one ingredient it was supposed to be taken for. For example, a Vitamin C supplement pill had nothing that contained Vitamin C in it at all; rather it was filled with chemicals that I had never heard of before and that is coming from a health freak.

So, yes, it is important to read labels and make sure the contents are what they should be. In addition, I believe that multivitamins should be purchased in the most natural form as possible. Many name brands have carcinogens that are actually bad for the health. Sticking to healthy natural ingredients to assure there are no harmful chemicals is the only way to make a wise investment.

Understanding the difference between poor quality and synthetic supplements is the first step. The second step is to know which multivitamin to take to assure they are worth the money you are pushing out. For example, it makes no sense to purchase a supplement that contains high qualities of calcium if you are a young male. Males do not require higher levels of calcium like women do, their bodies would not benefit from the higher dosage.

The results are in, multivitamins will change your life!

Great topic! I have taken a multivitamin every day since I was a little girl, but I have wondered whether it's worth the money. Incidentally, I have always been in good health.

I do not take any added vitamins. According to my doctor if I eat right for the most part I should not need the extra vitamins. He also said it would not hurt me if I did take them. I tried to take a simple calcium suppliment because my medication eats my calcium. Long story short the suppliment sent my heart to racing and caused me more problems than were needed. My mother has diabetes type two and she takes fish oil because her doctor recommended it. Thanks for a good article.

Huh, I didn't realize some multivitamins contained carcinogens. I tried taking a multivitamin awhile back, but it always gave me a terrible stomachache. Maybe I got one of the bad ones. Thanks for the info.

Do not think multi-vitamins are a waste of time and money. I prefer a diet that includes all the bodies needed nutrients, but our foods are so processed most of that value is taken away before it hits the table, or should I say stomach? Foods that are naturally good for you often cost twice as much as the kind that is not, so a pill a day is a good way to deal with proper nutrition for a healthy body.

Shakespeare never chewed his cabbage twice... why must you chew other people's cabbage? This is very familiar in text to me. Curious.

Good info, I don't really like to take supplements and would rather get my vitamins from fruits and veggies, but I think it's good to take them since most of us don't get enough.

Great Article! I take supplements each day...usually an OPC and other antioxidants. I also take vitamin C and B12. All of these are Isotonic in form; powder you mix with water so they are put in an isotonic state. These are absorbed into your body extremely quickly because the stomach doesn't have to convert them to an isotonic state as it does with other foods and pills. The food needs to be an an isotonic state before all the nutrients are absorbed into the body through the colon. But there are also studies which say that supplements are not substitutes for the real thing (the natural foods which contain the vitamins) and high doses of supplements are not necessarily any better for the body. So who do you believe? Dave

Great article! The people that complain about multivitamins are just too ignorant to find out about health issues that could resolve from not taking them. Multivitamins are the best source of everything, not one supplement is going to supply enough for everyone. They will learn. Nice work as always!

I take supplements to address specific issues, such as fish oil for my heart and circulation, gingko for my memory (so far it hasn't helped:()and ginger pills for my arthritis. But I stopped taking a general multivitamin long ago.

The problem I see with multivitamins is simply that they don't provide enough of any one thing. Instead I recommend supplements such as Juice Plus or blue-green algae.
