Labor Day has been observed for more than 100 years. It is devoted to no one man, race, creed or nation. It is the first Monday in September. A lot of major cities hold events to celebrate Labor Day weekend.

Washington D.C. area

September 2 starting at 8 p.m. The National Symphony Orchestra will be having a free concert at the U.S. Capital. This annual concert is led by conductor Emil De Cou. This concert helps kick off the performing arts season. For more info call 202-461-8113 after 2:30 p.m.

September 1 - 3 from 2-10 p.m. Enjoy the Kennedy Center Prelude Festival. The festival features readings, concerts, special events.
Performances include KC Jazz Company, Visual Comedian, Lily Cai Chinese Dance Company and much more. Many of these are free events at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 2700 F Street, NW, Washington, DC.

Detroit, Michigan

This is one city that offers a lot of fun for the whole family. It also has the largest Labor Day parade in the state. Motor City will be sponsoring this event. It is known to be one of the best and biggest events around.

Detroit Jazz Festival is held on Labor Day weekend for three days and is free. It provides six stages of entertainment with some of the hottest names in jazz. Their motto is "Music on All Cylinders".

Atlanta, Georgia

A city big on outdoor Labor Day events. Some of the main events this year:

Sky High Hot Air Balloon Festival. The hot air balloons take off in the morning and evenings over the Labor Day Weekend. This event is held at the Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain Georgia. 1-800-CALLAWAY (225-5292)

If your into fresh air and nature take a good hike in the state of Georgia. They feature the Appalachian Trail which provides 75 miles and 2,510 - 4,461 feet. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area covers almost 50 miles across the river. You can paddle your way across the river for a couple of hours if you so desire. You also can hike, swim, boat, bird watch and can go white water rafting. Contact the Island Ford Visitor Contact Station 678-538-1200 for further information. This park is for day use only. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
