Time is running out to submit your entry this year to the 48 Hour Film Festival. Submissions are due by August 31, 2007. This year will be the tenth 48 Hour Film Festival, a showcase for making a short movie over the time that most people waste watching football games, mowing the lawn and having catch-up sex. For a complete history of the 48 Hour Film Festival read this previous article.

Here is the exciting news update. The recent Fox reality show On The Lot actually featured on-screen some of the people involved in the 48 Hour Film Festival in outtake segments. In addition, when the producers of On The Lot embarked upon their search for potential contestants, one of the first places they looked toward was the 48 Hour Film Festival. The reason for this is that, as anyone who has taken a look at the films submitted in the past can see, the quality of moviemaking that can be done within the limited scope required for entry can be quite impressive. In fact, most of the films featured on the 48 Hour Film Festival site are far, far better than that winning Coke commercial currently being foisted upon movie audiences in theaters across the country. (You know the one I'm talking about, where the guy moves throughout his day in stop motion animation only to arrive in an office setting with no payoff; this won an award??).

Time is running out. Once you remove the 48 hours required to make your movie, you've only got a week left to get it in.

Oh, and live-action stop-motion moviemaking is close to masochism (as well as being pointless)...but the jury's still out...

What if you're busy writing for the first 24 hours? ;)I guess there may be something called crash directing (or filming) in 24 hours--but it has to be proven by someone else before I try it. I didn't know much about this film fest, Tim, so thanks for the interesting info about it. With all the moviemaking software bundles available right off a Best Buy software shelf for around $200--I'm betting someone could make something in 48 hours that looks like it came straight out of Industrial Light & Magic. As I pointed out in my most recent article--we're living in an age where we have incredible creative tools that'll be putting how we create art (and independent movies) through a different perspective. Nevertheless, creativity is still needed even with those tools. Once a computer starts doing the creating for us (and some software already helps push it along)--then the arts are really on a slippery slide...

Timothy timothy timothy, once again you manage to slip something subtly intelligently hilarious and sly into what could ordinarily be taken as a simple informative factual piece. (see: first paragraph second to last line).you must be quite a character in person. i can totally see you running some avante garde spoken word or traveling burlesque type of variety show around the world to meet in underground top secret but highly exclusive opium dens or the headquarters of copycat dead poets society groups.
