Whether you live in a apartment or house, you can add a indoor water garden easily. Bring the natural appeal of nature to your home. They are easy to make and require little maintenance. All you need is a little talent, correct plants and atmosphere.

First off you need to decide what type of water garden you would like to create. Do you wish the plants to float or just be in the soil.

Do you want a combination? Do you desire to have fish in the water garden also. Remember is you add fish you will need the proper equipment for maintenance.

Choosing Your Container

First you need to decide what type of container you wish to use. Just about any type that holds water can work. If you go with a ceramic pot make sure it is glazed inside. If it is not you can water proof it by simply adding water sealant. Follow the directions closely. Avoid brass or copper containers for these will deteriorate. You can also use concrete containers and fish bowls. Even decorative glassware can be used for floating plants and adds strong appeal to your decore. If you decide on a concrete container you need to remove the lime first. Then fill it with water and repeat this for ten days. Then your container will be ready to use.

Selecting Your Plants

A little ground work is necessary here. You will need to find plants that require soil and can take root in gravel or float if you so desire.

There are two general areas of soil plants:

Emergent plants - These grow out of canal water. Their roots are underwater in the bed mud and their leaves and flowers grow above the water. Example of these plants are Common Bulrush and Arrow.

Submergent plants - These live under the water in the canal. Examples of these are Spiked Watermilfoil.

There is also another area of plants called floating plants or floaters. These float freely in the canal water. They are not rooted to the bed of the canal. Example of these plants are Duckweed and Water Lettuce.

It is wise to seek advice from someone knowledgeable of plants in the store where you purchase them. Make sure you pick plants that all have the basic needs such as sunshine or shade. You may want to consider the height as to which the plants will grow.
