Man has domesticated several species of animals. Since prehistoric time, every breed or species of the animal kingdom has come under the domination of man. From the large African elephant to slipperly seals and eels, man has used these creatures to his own ends. However, only the canine rises above the ranks of helper to become man's best friend.

The close bond between a man and his dog began centuries ago when the wolf showed an uncanny ability to do the bidding of man with a sense of purpose. Not only did the wolf help gather food and help man hunt for food but the wolves also protected their master. The domestication of the wolf provided man more than a help mate. The wolf became a domesticated animal and also became man's best friend.

Dogs are the only species that can be selectively bred for specific tasks. Dogs are now bred to have a certain type of coat, or a specific eye color. Dogs can be bred to exhibit certain temperaments. In earlier times dogs were crossbred to be herders, guard dogs or huntersof birds or other prey . Humans cannot breed a super race of human beings but can play around with doggie DNA to create their own perfect specimen of dog.

In addition to the power that man has over the type of dog he can create, man also wants and enjoys the companionship of the four legged creatures. Man also needs the emotional stimulation from this animal. Dogs provide an emotional outlet that humans need to thrive. Big strong men will hug, play with and talk to dogs when they will only mutter to other family members. Dogs relate to humans on a social, emotional and physical level that other pets like fish, birds and reptiles cannot.

A dog is man's best friend because dogs are flexible creatures. Man can choose a certain breed of dog that can survive in almost any climate. Dogs are hardy creatures and can live a long and active life.

Dogs have much greater genetic variability than other domesticated animals. Dogs come in a variety of sizes, temperaments colors, breeds and ancestry.
