On Wednesday afternoon, House Republican Whip Roy Blunt of Missouri issued a statement in support of the Bush Administration's continued prosecution of the Iraq War and the President's positive address to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Missouri.

According to Blunt, the tide of the war is still turning in favor of a decisive U.S. and Coalition Forces victory, which hawks maintain is now the only viable option to re-establishing and strengthening lasting peace and stability in Iraq and the Middle East; and as General Petraeus, the "field marshal" of the United States' forces, is beginning his report on the progress of the war, due to be given to the Congress in September, even some Democrats are changing their opinion about the need for an immediate troop withdrawal.

"The President this morning rightly identified our current campaign in Iraq as part of a generational struggle between two very different views of the world: one that believes in the promotion of democracy and the dignity of the human spirit, and another whose sole source of legitimacy derives from its ability to destroy human life and disseminate a message of hate, fear, and intolerance. This is a struggle, as the President suggested, that will not be won with a single battle. But while the fight continues at home and overseas, the undeniable progress being made by our troops on the ground has created a new landscape in Iraq," Blunt stated.

A United States troop surge earlier in 2007, at first opposed by the newly installed Iraqi government, has since met with success; even embedded journalists have written positive reports about the effectiveness of the new strategy, especially since July.

Although a majority of them voted for supporting and financing the war when it was first entered into in early 2003, most Democrats now are vociferously opposed to continuing the war, with many of them declaring defeat, and the Congressional majority constantly citing the "failed policies of the Bush Administration" in the prosecution of the war as a reason for cutting and running from Iraq before many more American lives are needlessly lost.
