Why I Quit Facebook

A College Student's Account of Quitting the Most Addictive Site on the Internet and a College Phenomenon

My friends, upon hearing that I deactivated my Facebook account, stared at me with first surprise, disbelief, and then admiration. I attend Oberlin College, a small liberal arts school in Ohio, but it’s the same for every school:
Facebook is hands-down the campus “drug” of choice.

Haven't heard of it? Facebook is a social networking service like the infamous MySpace. For free, you can set up a profile with your photos, interests, classes, club memberships, etc. and proceed to “friend” yourself to other people’s profiles to meet people and keep in touch (or you can simply wait until they “friend” you). What makes Facebook different from other social networking services is that it requires a college email address to start an account. (This has recently changed, spreading to some high schools and corporations, but these additions are less successful.) At heart, Facebook is for college kids, and with over six million college students holding accounts, Facebook has well succeeded in its goal.

Facebook is remarkable not only for its widespread popularity on campuses, but also because it has directly affected campus social life. Say, for instance, I meet a fellow student on campus with a copy of Tolstoy in her hand. “Oh, I’m reading Anna Karenina!” I exclaim, happy to meet another Russian literature fan. “Yes, I’ve read that too,” the acquaintance responds, “and now I’m on his short stories.” After a brief chat, we smile and go our separate ways.

Great, very well written. I'm thinking of making the big step myself...

Very insightful, but this comes from someone that 100+ friends on Facebook. I am of the "20 friends" group, which reminds me of how "uncool" I am, but also that school takes priority. Now that I am a graduate student Facebook is a great way to check up on the few friends I had as an undergraduate without wasting anyone's time.

This is all true (especially the "going Facebook steady"), however if you like keeping in touch with acquaintances Facebook is an easy available tool (and it gets much less spam than my email inbox).

Wise decision. You really have some good insight on this. I'm going to recommend my daughters who are 18 and 19 read this.
