One of the most important things you can do for your pet is take care of their teeth. A healthy mouth may add years to your pet's life. Preventive care is essential to preventing cavities and periodontal disease. You can start this care at home by making sure their teeth are brushed regularly. A routine of brushing should be established when pets are young. Bacteria will still build up quickly and need to be removed even if your pet recently had a dental cleaning by the vet. Regular home care will continually keep bacteria off the teeth and lower the risks of problems. Make sure the toothpaste is made for pets. Plague accumulation on the teeth and gums will become tartar which can interfere with the balance of healthy bacteria. The first sign of periodontal disease is gingivitis which causes sensitive red gums that bleed. If infection and periodontal disease occur then teeth may need to be pulled. Dental examinations should be an important part of your pet's dental care. Teeth will be throughly evaluated below and above the gum line. A cleaning and polish will follow to help prevent damage of gum tissue and the bone around the root. This will keep teeth intact. Antibiotics are given to your pet before a cleaning procedure because a bacterial infection could disperse by the blood stream and through the body. Pets with certain illnesses such as diabetes, may need to have their teeth cleaned more often by a professional.
