It was a hot day in the late 50's when young Emmett Till and his cousins went to a small town store somewhere in Mississippi. He'd been visiting his uncle for the summer. Thinking nothing of it, the young men stepped up to the counter, paid for their snacks and ran off along their way.

Later that evening the 14 year old child settled down for bed after a hard day of play. He'd talked to his mother on the phone earlier that day and told her to make sure that she kept an eye on his bicycle because he'd be home soon.

Suddenly from the shaddows of the darkness chaos broke out! The door was smashed in! Someone was in the house! Furnititure went flying everywhere! Crash! Bang! The women and children were screaming in terror.

Then as abruptly as it began; it was over. A loud silence set in as the family realized that young Emmett was taken somewhere into the darkness...

A few days later the child's body was recovered from the local swamps. His eyes had been gouged out. His penis had been removed. He'd been dismembered in other ways as well. The coroner later said that he was probably still alive while all of this happened. With an axe, they split the child's head in half. Then, after all of this, they shot the young boy in the head with a shotgun.

The local officials did not want to send the child's body home to the mother but later gave in on the condition that she not open the coffin. They packed the box full of lime but the pungent smell still permiated the air as the train pulled into the station.

Who could do such a thing to a beautiful young child? Was it someone like Ted Bundy? Jeffrey Dahmer? What was the reasoning for this? No. It was someone much worse than Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy either one.

Some time later three men were charged with the brutal murder but later aquitted in a kangaroo court.

Their defense you ask? The child allegedly had made an inuendo to the wife of the store owner that she perceived to be a sexual advance. This beautiful young boy, Emmett Till, was black and the store owner's wife was white.

To Anonymous who displayed surprise at Al-Qaeda being compared to the Klan and such things, your right on both accounts. There is no match, because there is no reason to compare the two since it is obvious to anyone that they are exactly the same. Secondly, you are right about the fact that Al-Qaeda killed thousands in one day and thousands did not die in the Emmett Till case. Instead the clan has killed HUNDREDS of thousands over a span of over a hundred years and has tortured and tormented even more.

Hope one day people will learn to live together, and all terror groups like Al-Qaeda, who try to stop modern cultures grow, or PKK, Kurdish child killers, who try to divide, take over countries and name it Kurdistan will be history. Killing innocent civilians is a crime against humanity. We will never allow them succeed. God bless all those innocents murdered in terror attacks.

This sadest part about this entire situation is that our country has lost touch with it's citizens. Why isn't the federal government involved such as the Justice Department concerning this atrocity? A young man is losing his life by the very same officials (educational, governmental, and judicial)who are supposed to be protecting his life and rights. The superintendent obviously could care less about federal and state laws; therefore, why hasn't the governor stepped in? Why has this escalated to this level? Why this boy and his family? Something is terribly wrong here. What this demonstrates is that the State of Louisiana has failed miserably in protecting their citizens from hate crimes and bureaucratic corruption. Unless there is oversight this will continue and children will continue to be damaged. It's not a black/white issue. If we cannot have democracy here, why are we fighting for democracy in Iraq? We are not setting an example as a country who protects it's citizens

A video that shows the school librarian explaining that there was no racism issues at the school and her infamous "I don't even know what nooses mean" comment. It is near the end of the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSUAl_CImBU

To the anonymouse response: GET A CLUE! To the article writer, thank you. You have really written something worth reading. For those who don't understand how this is just as bad as anything else that is deemed terroristic, you should reevaluate what you think of as terrorism. This case is down right dispicable. Most kids who fight in school get suspended and are back enjoying their lives in no time. But this young man, who we don't even know if he did anything, is going to lose the rest of his life, basically, because some people can't live in the real world. Which is black, white, red, yellow, brown, and green. The federal courts need to step in on this.

I understand Al Quaeda better than I understand the Klan. Actually I do not know much about him, but it goes like this: An Iraqi war Marine vet said for every 3 or 4 enemy we kill we wake up 10 or 12 more. Some 6 year old kid in Iraq that saw his whole family blown apart by USA bombs dropping from the sky, may grow up to seek revenge upon all USA citizens. Timothy McVeigh is the one who tried to blow up a World Trade center to extract revenge for government crimes against his people. OPOWC made a good statement in this article. It is exactly the same thing: cower in fear of the bullies or fight back.

The hanging of nooses is a Klan joke or else no one would have found it funny. You say that no one was killed in this incident {Referring to the Jena6 I assume} but you are very wrong: What those nooses represented was the murder of innocent people throughout the course of time that makes Aushwitz look like a small number of people. Those nooses were meant to conjure images of this- and that's what they did for quite alot of also innocent people who were simply trying to go about their daily lives. Giving a young man 22 years for a crime that they can not even prove that he was involved in is in many ways even worse than murder- it not only murdered his mind- it took his dreams- it took the last years of his childhood- it murdered his soul. And unlike Alqueida who most Americans agree to get rid of- many here still don't get that.

The Klan {Just like the Neo Nazis and the skin heads- and any other group that uses terror to accomplish its purposes} is EXACTLY like alqueida- and all terrorist orgs. should be on the terrorist watch list- period; yet we give these organizations permits to demonstrate in public- with police escorts- and at times with their own guns displayed. It's not only about equality- it's about terrorism- as I have tried to exhibit in the essay. Thank you for your resonse though and I welcom all opinions on this forum.

There need to be a change of venue for these six young african american men. We all as human beings should pray for these young men in this unjust situation. Let us pray as well for this obvious racial motivated town. I'm disgusted and saddened that I can not be there in support for these young men. This is unfair and this ridicuios case should be discharged from the courts.

I can't believe this is even being compared to Al Quaeda! Not even a close match! I believe in equality--but thousands of people did not die here!

Good reporting. "Color of Change" website has pre-written letters you can sign and send at the flick of a mouse. NAACP has a petition to sign, as well as "Petitions on Line".
