I am not especially versed in politics. I do not pretend to be. I have worked as a poll officer for the past several elections, and will continue to do so. I figure, if I really do not care one way or another, at least I can serve those who do. Having said that, I do have to admit being concerned about a phrase I have noticed being thrown around. That phrase is "Black Vote".

"Black Vote" can be best described as the phenomenon of black people tending to vote in unison for one person, usually for emotional reasons. The reason could be that that person is also black, or that there is something about that person that touches the heart of black people as a whole. Being a black person myself, I have to admit to not quite understanding the "Black Vote". I do not really understand why I should vote for anyone based on nothing but my race, or pandering to people of my race.

I had a conversation the other evening about Senator Obama and the assumption that he has the "Black Vote". Both I and the other person are black and while we had to admit to being acutely aware of and curious about the Senator, neither of us was wed to voting for him, as we were not done looking into the all of the possibilities.

Am I alone in my desire to weigh all candidates regardless of race, or sex? Call me naïve, but I certainly hope not! Before I vote for "mah brotha", "my sister", or anyone else for that matter, I need to know where they stand on education, foreign policy, degree of government involvement into the lives of private citizens, and even a bit about his or her own personal sincerity and morality. I need to hear what they say they are going to do, and I need to decide for myself if I think I can believe them. At that point, I may vote for whom I believe is the strongest. If I cannot make up my mind, I will not vote at all... again.

Did You Know?
The black vote is not a solitary phenomenon; it can also be compared to the Christian Vote, the Hispanic Vote, etc.

Democrats are deceivers. Barrack Obama chose to be a Democrat because MOST Blacks vote Democrat. They do so based on racist and economic reasons. Trust me on this, I know. Communists, liberals, and socialists have all penetrated the Black mind telling them they can not do anything in a racist White Republican nation. Then they use the "American history of slavery" spin. Republican Blacks are less racist and achieve more in American life on average than Blacks who vote Democrat. If you hate Whites, hate American history, have a "slave mentality", blame all Whites and Jews for anything that goes wrong, believe in segregation, believe in self Black determination, believe that Blacks and Whites should "NEVER" marry, well vote Democrat. Why are White Democrats so clueless, or are they now?

Good article. However, I WILL NOT be voting for Barack Obama. As an African-American woman, I find him to be a liar and morally challenged. He is not a Christian and when he finally admits it, the angels in heaven will rejoice. He's using whatever card he can to get votes. I am tired of being deceived!

Great article. I think that the term "black vote" is used in the media for statistics or finding out where certain candidates stand. However, this has caused some to pigeonhole candidates and voters into one single group. All black people do not think alike, and the same goes for all other races. Alyce also made a good point in her comment. It is sad that citizens are being tracked based on gender and ethnicity. Votes should be about individuals, and they should be private. The only "groups" that makes sense to me is individual states, when they measure the outcome for each candidate.

Jim, as Obama himself pointed out on the Daily Show - Cheney, Bush et. al have decades of experience, and where has that gotten us? Having experience doesn't mean that someone will make good choices. and not having experience doesn't mean that someone would make bad choices. The majority of the American people are fed up with old school politics, and Obama's supporters find Obama's fresh approach appealing precisely because he's NOT an old school politician.

Jim.. I respect your opinion, but I do not believe it is your right to demand explantion of reason for why someone might vote one way or another. To offer it is one thing, but technically, voting is a private matter.

"I will vote for Obama, but not because I'm black or because he's black. I will vote for him because I feel that he will make a good president." Mind if I ask upon what you base your belief? He's got 3 years experience in Congress, none as a chief executive, and listening to some of his "intentions" should he get elected, he clearly is not wise enough to be chief executive. I actually believe Hillary would be a much better president.

Great article. I will vote for Obama, but not because I'm black or because he's black. I will vote for him because I feel that he will make a good president. :-)

The city DA told the black teens if they protested he could "ruin their lives with the stroke of a pen" and sure enough that is exactly what he is doing. Do you think GWB would step in and see that justice is done in Jena? I doubt it, but if Obama was Pres and we asked him to right the wrong, I bet he would listen to us. Only a person that has had to deal with bigotry based on his or her skin color could truly represent everyday people who are at the mercy of large corporations that buy our current crop of representatives.

What is scary is someone is actually keeping track of how people vote based on gender and ethnicity. Our votes are supposed to be cast secrectly, so how does anyone know that blacks love the Clintons? The one truth is that Obama is getting persons of color registered to vote as well as cynical "white" people. Michelle put the press in their place early on: it is not about race, he is a man. Sadly, people are not color blind. In Jena LA in 2006 white teens hung nooses on a "Whites Only" tree on school property.
