How many catalogs, postcards, sales letters, introductory offers, etc. do you receive around a holiday? Countless, right? Why?
Because smart business owners know that this is one of the best times to introduce their product/service to new customers - and possibly gain them for life. Why?

1. Tis the season: Practically every holliday is a time to give gifts, so consumers are primed to shop. What better time to introduce your product/service than when people are in the mood to buy. There's less "selling" to be done. If customers like what you offer and can afford it, many times your offerings will practically sell themselves.

Capitalize on this predisposition to shopping by being on that flyer, in that catalog, on that postcard that's in their mailbox.

2. Impulse Buying: Most of us have busy lives and holidays are a traditionally hectic time. This leads to many last-minute shoppers, who tend to buy on impulse. With time running out, a list of people to get through and other matters that need attending to, you have a better chance of making a sale.

3. More Competition; More Sales: Believe it or not, your marketing material has a better chance of being seen around holidays than at any other time of year. Why? Because consumers are primed to shop, they are on the lookout for everything from deals, sales and discounts to unique, hard-to-find items that aren't mass produced.

Will your ad be where shoppers can find it

Now that you know why you are more likely to snag new customers around a holiday, how do you go about doing it? Three simple ways:

A) Make it Easy to Purchase: Give customers as many ways to order as possible, eg, via phone, fax, online. Also, accept as many forms of payment as possible (credit card, debit card, cash (if you have a retail outlet), personal check, etc.).

B) Generous Return Policy: Customers want the assurance that if the gift needs to be returned, it can be. With this assurance, many will purchase more - with added confidence.

Takeaways
  • Offer generous return policies.
  • Start planning months in advance for the next holiday.
  • Follow up with customers year round -- not just on holidays.
Did You Know?
While it may be easier to make a sale around a holiday, the payoff for you as a business owner is to make such an impact that when other special occasions roll around (eg, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.), customers will remember you -- hence become a lifelong customer!
