Anti-depressant drugs have no doubt been a godsend to those with moderate to severe depression. They are not, however, the best option for those who suffer from the blues occasionally (which describes most of us). Besides, these drugs have been associated with a range of unpleasant side effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding, headaches, dry mouth and the dreaded sexual dysfunction.

Rather than turning to the pharmacy for relief from a bout of the blues, you can turn to the supermarket instead. Here are five foods that are loaded with mood-elevating vitamins and minerals:

Spinach. Spinach is rich in vitamin B6 and folate. Both of these substances are instrumental in the production of serotonin, a brain chemical that regulates mood and fights depression. Deficiencies in B6 and folate can result in abnormally high levels of homocysteine in the body; this chemical has not only been linked to depression, but to heart attacks and strokes as well. Other sources of B6 and folate include peas, asparagus, turkey, fish and bananas.

Salmon. Salmon is loaded with highly nutritious omega-3 fatty acids. Numerous clinical studies show that omega-3 oil fights depression. Studies also reveal that there is a low incidence of depression in countries that consume a lot of fish. It is imperative that foods rich in omega-3 oils be included in the diet because the body does not manufacture this substance on its own. Other sources of omega-e oil include walnuts and flaxseed .

Chickpeas. Chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans) are an excellent source of iron. Iron is an essential mineral that helps carry oxygen from the lungs to the muscles and other organs. Iron deficiency results in fatigue, irritability, headaches, and, you guessed it, depression. A significant deficiency can lead to anemia; if left untreated, anemia can become life threatening. Other sources of iron include whole grains, fish and poultry.
