Ooh, if I could just smack them upside the head, then they would behave. They would know I wouldn't take any nonsense....

I must admit the idea of being permitted to "hit" a student is appealing. I would be happy with just the permission to take given students by the ear lobe and lead them to appropriate behavior.

However, giving educators this much power would be asinine, inappropriate, and ineffective.

Like a bill coursing through the legislative channels on Capitol Hill with unknown issues riding on the coattails, the idea of allowing educators to "hit" students bears too many side effects.

Even though as educators we are stuck in disciplinary quagmires on an everyday basis, having the permission to strike a student contradicts our purposes as educators: to educate. We are not in the profession of education to impose rules and punish rule breakers. Our job as educators, as difficult as it can sometimes be, is to broaden the minds of our students, to provide equal opportunities to students of all backgrounds, beliefs, and values.

To even enter the realm of corporal disciplinary measures and practices opens doors to favoritism and abuse. Imagine the power to "hit" a student. How that would get out of hand (no, no pun intended!).

If one "hit" didn't bring about the desired behavior, then many educators would logically consider more "hits."

Imagine the parental reaction!

Lawsuits against schools are already crowding courts today. I would not want to deal with the irate parents whose children would be "hit." As a parent, I would be utterly frosted at such a proposal because discipline is my department. Not the school's.

Absolute power does corrupt absolutely.

I do not want that kind of power; I don't even want parental permission.

Striking a student? Can you imagine the damage to scholastic relationships among students and the teacher? We teachers would never be able to regain a student's trust after a solid slap upside the head. Not one student would be able to enjoy the love of learning in such surroundings.

Should educators be allowed to "hit" students?

Absolutely not!

Did You Know?
Being spanked by a teacher would undermine every facet of the purpose of education: to educate.

Amen to the student who says no! This article sincerely strikes down any design to use corporal punishment in the classroom; hitting is counter productive to education. My thanks to my comment makers!!

i think teachers shouldnt be able to hit students because its wrong at every level. They became teachers to teach not hit and i think that it is up to the parents if they want to do a punishment like that... so no i would say No its not right and if a teahcer has a Problem with the student they can send them out of the class room, or they can give them a referal. I am a student and if a teacher would ever hit me i would defend my self and smack back. i would go home and tell my parents and sew them. Any one who is not my parent is not allowed to hit me i wont allowe it.

When my kids were in school and Corporal Punishment was instituted the parents had to sign a form okaying it. I refused to give consent. The teacher needed to get the principal to administer the hitting. I knew my children were well behaved and would not allow a teacher to hit my child under any circumstances. There are ways to deal with unruly and misbehaving children and Colleges should be teaching teachers how to control the kids without resorting to physical force.

Where I live, students can get kicked out of school for at least three days for hitting back in self defence. It doesn't matter who hit first, both parties will be punished. Therefore, if teachers are allowed to hit students; that would be double standard. Hitting by teachers may get out of hand, a few may not know where to draw the line.

My middle school teachers delighted in "out-doing" each other in creating the most scary looking paddles. Yes, they hung on the wall next to the chalkboard. Yes, they were used regularly. Yes, I witnessed many a student's swatting, deserved or not. Thankfully, no, I was not one who was struck by a teacher. Witnessing was horrifying enough for me. I have been an educator, some 20+ years now, as well as a parent. Great article. Amen.

I'd be for allowing this, but only if students could strike back in self defense (ONLY in self defense).

I agree that teachers should never be allowed to hit students. My mother said that years ago when she was in school teachers did this, and she saw a teacher grab two kids by the hair and knock their heads together. If hitting was allowed, where would they draw the line? It's never okay. Great article.

Excellent article! A law like that could ultimately lead to abuse of students because where would one draw the line? I believe part of educating a child is teaching them not to use their fists to solve a problem, but to use their minds instead. If teachers were hitting students, this would most certainly contradict that lesson.
