According to a new report released by market researcher, Packaged Facts, there are almost 50 million Americans who fall into the demographic category of "Fit Consumer". Plus, they've got the household income to back up their action-packed lifestyles---a collective $2.2 trillion. The new report, Fit Consumers in the U.S.: Tapping into the Active Lifestyles of Sports and Fitness Participants predicts that number will exceed $3 trillion by 2011.

As defined by the report, a "Fit Consumer" is someone who exercises at least three times per week and participates in one sport activity as often as they can get a chance to do so. The categories are further expanded based on criteria and a person may be considered to be a "Extreme Fit Consumer" or a "Wannabe Fit Consumer". This demographical representation identifies a quick-growing number of the American population. They are not only ideal targets for marketing services linked to their active lifestyles, such as, health clubs, fitness equipment, nutritional products, but they also tend to spend much of their hard-earned cash on travel, cars, financial products, and pampering.

Interesting, considering how much we hear about the obesity epidemic in the US. Perhaps targeting the fit (ie- TV ads) would inspire others to follow suit. (Maybe not, but a few less Burger King and Tim Horton's commercials wouldn't hurt.)
