Tucked into the hills of northern West Virginia is Valley Falls State Park. Located about halfway between Fairmont and Grafton, West Virginia, Valley Falls State Park is located conveniently near Interstate 79. The park covers over 1000 acres of rolling hills and is dissected by the Tygart Valley River. The park is designated 'day use' only, meaning that it does not provide overnight accommodations. Camping is available in nearby Grafton at Tygart Lake State Park, numerous bed and breakfasts, and hotels are also easily accessible in the area. The park is named after a series of waterfalls in the park where the Tygart Valley River rushes through the valley. The river is quite picturesque in the park flowing quickly past boulders and over the falls. The large boulders in the river are often used by sunbathers and are fairly easily accessed. The flow of the river in the park is quite strong and probably is not a good place for small children to play. While I have not personally fished in the river it certainly looks like it would be a great fishing location. Trout are stocked well upstream of the park, while some trout may live in the park area it is unlikely to provide productive trout fishing.
Valley Falls State Park is an ideal place to picnic thanks to the well kept shelters being placed near the scenic stream. Persons picnicking at the park will have a spectacular view of the whitewater in the river and the sounds of the churning river. The park also offers 18 miles of hiking trails for hikers of various skill levels. The trails provide a quiet walk through the forested area and many provide great views of the river.
Valley Falls State Park also offers is a playground, volleyball, and horseshoe pitching areas in the park. Many of the features in the park (including the restrooms) are handicap accessible. Visitors to the park can see the remains of the grist mill and sawmill that once operated on the property.
