Why Marijuana Should Be Legalized

No, I'm not a dope smoker. I have absolutely no interest in touching the stuff. I dabbled in it throughout my high school years, and the last time I smoked it I decided I really didn't like the way it made me feel. I don't like drugs or even drinking (although I have been known to toss back a few drinks on occasion) for the same reason. I do smoke cigarettes, but I hate those, too for what they do to my body and have tried numerous times, unsuccessfully, to quit. I also have small children at home, and I won't allow them to be around it. My ex-husband would tremble if he thought I knew he ever smoked weed around our daughter--I know he does, but I also don't have proof and I don't mention it because I all it will do is make him lie to me. If I notify the police that he and his friends are smoking weed in the house with my daughter, do you know what they will do? They will laugh at me. It's been done. The authorities in my area are more concerned with meth labs and underage drinking.

The thing is, I have many friends who do smoke marijuana. I have many more friends that are like me and wouldn't even consider it, I have some friends who will occasionally light one up, and I have a couple of friends who smoke marijuana like one would smoke cigarettes. I've seen the effects marijuana has on these people--their personalities, ambitions, overall lifestyle--and I say to you, they act, think and live better than any drunk I know. So my argument is this: Hel-lo, you're going to make marijuana illegal and keep alcohol legal? I don't see how this is rational.

I know people who will anger at the very thought of some "pot-head" who wishes to advocate for the legalization of marijuana. It's a gateway drug! They cry. It makes people stupid! They yell. People, if these are your beliefs, throw out every bit of alcohol you have in your house, because if you drink and say these things about marijuana you are a hypocrite.

Takeaways
  • You're going to make marijuana illegal and keep alcohol legal? I don't see how this is rational.
  • If you smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol, you might as well smoke marijuana.
  • Alcohol is more of a "gateway" drug than any other drug, and yet it's still legal.
Did You Know?
Marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or cigarettes, although users can develop an addition and even suffer from symptoms of withdrawal.

Good article. The number one reason it is not legalized, you kind of touched on this, is money. If the feds could tax it, it would be a large money making revenue. Right now, people who have never tried it, are scared senseless to advocate it, thinking everyone will be running around wild, destroying their happy homes and comfy lifestyle. Fear is power. Say the word terror, as W. often does, and you'll end up believing it.

I believe that Marijuana should be legalized. I also believe that the US Government should stay out of people's business. If they need to smoke Marijuana, they should be allowed to do so. If they want to smoke it, they should be allowed to do so. Why is it against the law, anyway? There are a lot worse things that people can do, like Cocaine, Crystal Meth, etc. But using small amounts at a time isn't going to kill you; so why should it be illegal? Like most adults, we're responsible, we pay our taxes, we love and care for our partners, and children (if we have any). We should be allowed to buy marijuana and smoke any time and anywhere we please. Those drug prevention agencies are over-reacting. They seem to think it leads to aggressive behaviour or to harder drugs. I've smoked pot on and off for the past year and that's all I do. I don't snort cocaine or do Meth or anything. So, what's the problem? Why is it still illegal? Answer that, eh?

As a devout pothead, I have one thing to say to Meredith: THANK YOU! Finally, someone who doesn't need a glass stomach to see clearly writes an article on legalization. If only Uncle Sam would stop diddling me in my sleep and see the bigger picture such as you have.

**applause** Wow, excellent article. I'm like you, I have nothing to gain from pot being legalized someday, but I agree with you completely. Plus, legalization would free up prison space for the criminals who truly need to be there, not just someone who got caught with a bag of weed. Criminalization of marijuana is just like Sunday 'blue laws'- something that got left on the history books bc of some old, out of date belief. You can thank Hearst for pot being illegal, it was all false advertising back when this country was being founded.
