Both airline and road travel can be challenging for people with blood sugar problems, but traveling can be enjoyable and simple with just a little planning ahead. Diabetes can become difficult to manage when traveling across time zones, experiencing extreme temperatures, or not having access to the right foods. Here are just six tips for people with diabetes, or those who are traveling with someone who is diabetic:

1. Schedule meals and medication according to time zone changes. Jet lag can have a significant impact on those with diabetes, and it's essential that diabetics get their meals on a regular schedule whenever possible. Adjusting to time zones will take time, but ensuring that meals are provided at the same times regardless of location will help make things easier. On the road, be sure to pack plenty of healthy snacks and food to keep blood sugar levels up.

2. Carry an insulin kit at all times. Pack a small tote bag with an insulin or blood glucose monitor and other necessary supplies, and be sure to pack everything tightly and securely. It's a good idea to let airport baggage personnel know what the contents of the bag are before they start searching. If you're on the road, make sure to store this in a cool dry place.

3. Stretch at regular intervals. Sitting in one place for extended periods of time isn't good for anybody, and a few leg raises, back stretches, or a short walk are perfect ways to keep circulation going. This is especially important for those with diabetes since poor circulation can lead to other health conditions; fresh oxygen helps too.

4. Carry a Diabetes Alert Card. This is available from the American Diabetes Association, and can help speed up treatment in case of emergency. Place this card in a wallet or handbag at all times.

5. Pack double the standard insulin supply. It's a good idea to be well-prepared, especially if packages or baggage may get lost. Pack two sets of supplies in different bags so you have a backup available at all times.
