According to the Orange County Sheriff's Office news release, police officers from all around California and across the nation are cracking down on drunk driver's through Labor Day with, "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." campaign. Did you know that in 2005, an approximate of nearly 13,000 people were killed in alcohol related accidents on the nation's roads. This means that each one who were killed had a blood alcohol level (BAC) of .08 or higher. In every state in the nation, a blood alcohol level of .08 is illegal and to get people to understand the dangers of drinking and driving. California and numerous other states across the nation are participating in the "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest" campaign to stop unnecessary deaths this Labor Day weekend.
The Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest campaign is telling drivers that if they drink and drive and they are caught, police officers will arrest you. There will be no exceptions to the rule, and no excuses at all. Once arrested for drunk driving, a judge can sentence you to jail time as well as require drivers to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle. This ignition interlock detects when a driver has been drinking, therefore prevents the driver from starting his/her vehicle. Another way the judge can monitor your drinking is by telling you to wear a trans dermal patch. This patch detects alcohol through the person's skin and is used while going to a treatment program.
Remember again that 13,000 people are killed every year from an alcohol related injury. Nearly 300,000 people are injured from an alcohol related accident. And for every 1.5 million arrested for drunk driving, only one in every 722 occurrences of drunk driving is actually caught. The statistics speak for themselves. The fact of the matter is that every 30 minutes, someone dies from drunk driving. A life that was wasted and a death that could have been prevented.
