In observing the film entitled Resurrecting the Champ, I paid specific attention to a quote offered at the movie's beginning as well as its conclusion: "a writer is like boxer in that he must stand alone; when his work is published, his talent is held out there for everyone to see." This singular remark effectively summarizes the main character's challenges throughout the film as he goes from struggling reporter to overnight sensation, only to witness his stock fall considerably.

This production's plot, which bases its material on an article written in the Los Angeles Times in 1997, centers on Eric Kernan, a well-meaning sports reporter trying to gain respectability at his publication, The Denver Times. However, Metz, who is his editor, dismisses his articles since he feels that they lack personality. This resulting lack of confidence seeps into his personal life as well; his interactions with his son Teddy consist of him telling stories such as being "friends with John Elway and playing golf with Muhammad Ali." Eric also faces considerable challenges in attempting to win the love and respect of his wife, Joyce, a fellow journalist at his periodical.
