There are some great shows on Bravo and TLC that I love, but recently I thought about the shows that I would like to see if I could program the station.

For example, I love Bravo's "Top Chef" but really, how many of us can ever apply those lessons to our own lives. I mean, I'm never going to try to make fish burger to rival Red Robin. Same with TLC's "What Not to Wear". Love the show and love the fashion tips, but I need to know how to look fabulous on a Wal-Mart budget. It's actually why I love "Trading Spaces". They do complete redesigns on a $1,000. Of course, I don't have a mobile carpentry shop, so that's a bit of a downside to that show.

What I'd really like to see would be shows for real Americans. Tell me what inexpensive wines I can serve to impress my friends and make it look I know more about wine than I really do. Help me figure out how to feed a family on $75 a week without resorting to unhealthy options and getting boring.

Here are my ideas for new reality shows:

1) Budget Moms. This show would be star real women from across the country with a limited budget and limited time to make meals. Contestants would be challenged to make a month's worth of menus for their family or a family of four on a budget. Then, the actual weekly challenge would be to prepared one of their dinner menus and serve it to their "family" in the 45 minute break between work and soccer practice.

2) Thrift store fashion. Dang near every community I have set foot in has atleast one nice thrift or consignment store. I would love to see a 'Project Runway" or "What Not to Wear" type show where all the materials have to come from a thrift store. A fun show could focus on the fashion designer going to small communities (or large communities) across the country and helping real women revamp their wardrobe on literally a thrift store budget.

3) Garage sale decorating. In the vein of "Design of a Dime", this show would again feature real people trying to furnish a room or an apartment on garage sale finds. The key would be to help people determine what to look for in a garage sale ad and how to determine if the price of an item at a sale is a find or a rip off.

Takeaways
  • Reality television shows are fun but never seem to feature real worlod people and real solutions.
  • A $5000 New York wardrobe is cool, but show me how to dress on my budget.
  • TLC and Bravo are fun, but could appeal more to the average person.

Once these women would begin to do these shows then they would no longer have a small budget...lol. Good ideas all though and yes I would watch them. Love to see people shop. Thanks for this article.
