Mohandas K. Gandhi was, and continues to be, one of the most influential figures of the modern age. His courage, ideas, and spiritualism helped free India from Britain's grasp, as well as inspire countless future leaders in their own struggles against oppression. A lawyer, born in India, but educated in Europe, he was still seen as a second-class citizen by most. Gandhi learned early in the movie about the strong racist tendencies of the British Empire at this time; he traveled as a first-class passenger in South Africa, but was kicked off the train for not moving to third-class. Seeing this injustice firsthand inspired Gandhi to do what he could to stop the unfair hold the British had on the lives of Indians in South Africa. He and other like-minded individuals began protesting unfair legislation, facing jail and beatings along the way. However, their courage and stubbornness helped to remove some of the unfair laws, and Gandhi was a hero.
