A Balanced Diet Beats Supplements
I don't know anyone who eagerly jumps out of bed in the morning so they can take a bunch of pills. All lists showing food sources containing niacin, vitamin B3, in the order from highest to lowest amounts by average serving size, contained approximately the same foods in the same order.
Salmon and tuna shared first place, with chicken, halibut, cold water fish, liver, beef, wheat, corn, potatoes and broccoli claiming the next nine spots. Tomatoes, peanuts, carrots, mushrooms, eggs, milk, brewer's yeast, organically grown pork and cheese were the only items that showed up in all the sources, except one list was lacto-ovo vegetarian and showed no meat. One other stated vitamin B3 was "synthesized in a healthy intestinal tract." Organically grown meats and vegetables rated higher than their hormone/chemical counterparts. Only one processed food, all bran, made any of the lists and it just barely squeaked by. How many of those foods do most of us usually eat?
No mention was made anywhere of sugarcoated, puffed cereals, fried foods, highly processed foods, all meat and no vegetables, canned anything or fast foods. Genetically modified organisms, weren't cited other than saying to avoid them. The item found most often throughout the entire list of vitamins and minerals was brewer's yeast.
If we have a working knowledge of blood typing, fast and slow metabolizing and other research based health regimens, we can fine-tune our diet. I can't use only one system to accomplish what I want to do in my life. I worked closely with the blood type system and found, like all the others in standalone situations, it had too many holes and shortcomings. If I have a problem, I isolate it by keeping a list and rotating foods until I ferret out the culprit. If we're a "true-believer" of any one method we'll likely have problems. I know a very smart but excessively analytical person who follows the blood type diet to the letter because the outcome can be seen in a laboratory setting. I spent most of a summer in reasonably close company with this person and observed the results.
