With many companies investing in the global market, employers seek employees with ability to speak second languages and understand other cultures. Study abroad offers students a competitive edge to start their career. In addition, it equips students with a practical real-life experience and provides academic credits.
Traveling abroad is an enriching experience - to make the most of your trip, planning is extremely important. From choosing your study abroad courses and applying for financial aid assistance to researching sightseeing landmarks and packing, below are seven tips that will prepare you for your language immersion program abroad.

1. Bolster Your Vocabulary - if you are an absolute beginner, pick up a phrase book (preferably with a pronunciation guide) or an audio guide from your local public library. Most universities, however will offer language courses where you will be able to brush up on your conversational language skills.

2. Stay open-minded - it is common to experience culture shock, especially in Eastern countries, but the best tool to adapting to a different culture is good attitude. Before going abroad, it is a good idea to do research on the country you're going visit. The public library, Internet and your friends or neighbors of diverse backgrounds are all good sources of information. Be sure to know the differences between the American culture and the culture of the country you're visiting - the faster you'll adapt to the other culture's customs, the more acceptable you will be to the people of that country.

3. Pack light and bring only what you need - find out which items you can buy cheaply abroad (most toiletries) and bring only the necessary - clothing, camera, an adapter, etc. If you're going to be traveling a lot while studying abroad, lugging around heavy luggage can be excruciating.
