Home makeovers are quite popular but it can also be very expensive if your home is not the one chosen on Oprah or Home Extreme Makeover. What ever happened to simple decorating ideas? One way to save a lot of money when decorating is to introduce rocks into your home.

When choosing rocks to decorate, gather more than you think - all different shapes, sizes and colors. You are not looking for consistency here. The overall natural theme will attract the eye as it will stand out.

Table Place Setting with Rocks

A flat rock can be used as a coaster. Use smaller rocks under utensils. Although difficult to find, larger flat rocks can be used as a place mat. Each place setting does not need to be same. Each setting will be unique in nature and the entire look gives the table a rustic, natural feel.

Replace Flowers with Rocks in a Centerpiece

It is okay if you are not a flower person. In a large clear glass vase, fill it with different colored rocks all the way to the top. The entire piece will make the arrangement visually striking.

Another set-up is to vary the heights of the clear vases and arrange them close together with different shades and sizes of rocks. This will look great on a mantel or next to magazines on a coffee table. As oppose to flowers, these rocks will never need to be watered or trimmed.

To make it look modern, gather an assortment of pebbles or small rocks and separate by color (do not use more than 3 different colors). Top each color separately until you reach the top.

Create a Game Board for the Coffee Table with Rocks

Find an outdoor flat slate and roughly 12 small to medium size stones. Try to keep the stones consistent to two colors (one set of 6 dark and the others light). With chalk, create lines on the slate to create a tic-tac-toe board. Mark the stones with X's and O's with washable crayons.

Substitute Bookends with Rocks

Get large rocks to hold your fictions and novels. Another option is to stack smaller stones to the sides of a book shelf to create an earthy tableau. This looks great against wood style book shelves.

Great ideas! I love nature inside the home. I have rocks, plants, fish, and wood. It's my "Zen space."
