Deep River, CT - At an upcoming informal open house, residents will be able to see elevations and interior floor plans of a proposed renovation and expansion to the Deep River Fire Department, DRFD, Headquarters Building at the junction of Union and West Elm Streets. Residents will also be able to see photos of current conditions of the 1961 facility and find out the estimated cost of the project.
The open house will be held on Wed., Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at the DRFD Headquarters Building.
Bob Raymond, DRFD Assistant Fire Chief and Building Committee Chairman, said the committee has spent the last two years preparing for the project.
The proposed expansion will allow the building to have a meeting/training room that could accommodate up to 110 people, Raymond said.
Currently when the firehouse hosts meetings, it must move all of its trucks into the parking lot.
The expansion will allow the building to have additional space for fire apparatus and create additional office space for the fire chief, assistant fire chief, secretary, fire marshal, and engineer.
The project will allow the Office of Emergency Preparedness to relocate from the basement of the Deep River Town Hall into the firehouse.
It will also allow the kitchen to be renovated and will make the building ADA compliant with a small elevator allowing access to the second floor.
The project is expected to drastically change the exterior of the firehouse which is seen by travelers driving on Route 80 between Route 9 Exit 5 and Main Street.
Raymond said the project is expected to fix cramped conditions which currently plague the facility.
