Boulder is a beautiful city, the perfect location for a college. Classes at the University of Colorado (CU) are to begin Tuesday, August 28, 2007. This year many students will have a different memory of their first day of class because at approximately 9:45 AM, Monday, August 27th, a student had been stabbed on campus.

While the Memorial Center has not been evacuated, students, faculty, and staff are being asked to stay away from the University Memorial Center (UMC) for several more hours while police investigate this stabbing.

It's been reported that a man who appeared to be in his 50's approached the UMC, grabbing the student from behind, and stabbing him in the throat. Campus police were nearby and responded. Witnesses report hearing the man yell that he had bomb making equipment in his backpack, as he ran away from the scene.

While being chased by police, the man began stabbing himself. He was apprehended and taken to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no one else was injured in this seemingly random attack.

The victim was also taken to the hospital, and appears to be in stable condition. CU officials have been in contact with the family of the victim.

The University of Colorado has a new way to send emergency messages to students. They are asking that students sign up for text-messaging so that if there was an emergency, a text message could be sent to their cell phone. Students, staff, and faculty can sign up to receive these messages by visiting the following CU web site, http://www.colorado.edu/alerts/signuphelp.html.

The CU-Boulder Task Force continues to review their emergency procedures. After the Virginia Tech shootings, as well as incidents at several Colorado high schools, they decided that quick text messaging would be a valuable addition to their current emergency communication systems.

Final Update: The injured student has decided to STAY at CU !!! Go Buffies! His family has asked that the press leave him alone and let him resume his life as a normal college student. I'm happy to comply and wish him a safe and happy year in Boulder!

Linda, Wow. You got a double whammy :( Fortunately, the student is recovering and has been released from the hospital. His parents are now in Boulder and have reported that he is making plans for the weekend (wanting to go to a CU Buffs game). It sounds like he'll miss classes this week, but LOTS of other students are rallying support for him.... he hasn't said if he'll stay, or leave.

Are there any updates on the student stabbed? Hopefully he is recovering and not having to leave school. It seems that universities have not grasped the concept that we are sending our children to their campuses and they have the responsiblity to do background checks on their employees. Let the mental health centers place their patients anywhere other than schools of any type. I have a freshman at Boulder and a junior at VT. Can't believe it!

8-28-2007 Update: The suspect was identified as a 38 year old man who worked at the Alfred Packer Grill that is in the UMC. He was refered to the college for employment by a mental health agency and had a criminal record. The University is now conducting criminal background checks on all employees. The stabbing victim, a freshman from Illinois, is doing well. Counseling services are available to all faculty, students, and staff by calling (303)492-6766.

"Mr. Astin was released from the state mental hospital in Pueblo and has been under supervision of the Boulder County Mental Health Center. He has worked with the Chinook Clubhouse, a support-network program of the Boulder County Mental Health Center, for approximately two years under the close supervision of mental health physicians and professionals, and was referred to the university for employment by that organization" - who else Colorado University hire to work for them.
