If you are one of the many owners of a Creative Zen Micro MP3 player and having problems making it work in Windows Vista, this guide will help you get it connected. Despite what I've read on some message boards, the Zen Micro will work with Windows Vista, but it will have very limited functionality compared to what you could do with it in Windows XP. Creative hasn't made too much of an effort to correct the problem, either.

This guide will show you how to make Windows Vista recognize your Creative Zen Micro, as well as explain how to copy music onto it and display correctly in the player. It's going to be a lot more hassle than what you're used to, but it's still better than buying a new MP3 player.

First, to even get Vista to recognize your Zen Micro, you will need to upgrade it to the current firmware version of 2.21.02, which can be downloaded from http://us.creative.com/support/downloads/.

Here's the bad news:
1. You can only upgrade the firmware from a Windows XP machine.
2. Upgrading the firmware requires you to erase the entire drive, meaning you'll have to copy all your music back on it after the update.

Now that you've upgraded the firmware, connect the Zen Micro to your Windows Vista PC using the USB cable. You're system will immediately recognize it as a portable device. This is the only way to even get the thing to recharge via USB.

You know all that software you used in Windows XP that let you organize the music on the device, change file names, and so on? None of it works in Windows Vista. Creative has a few programs you can download that supposedly work in Vista, but they wouldn't even recognize my player.

The only way I could get MP3 file copying to work was if I did it manually, as if I was copying to a portable hard drive or flash memory stick. Talk about tedious.

Yeah, it worked, well, its updating the firmware as i speak. Creative or Windows should have made a univeral driver, its rediculous, I had to toast my 30 gb zen xtra for the 4 gb micro. At least it may work though, so thats a plus/

I have Vista on my laptop and was looking to get a Zen. Is it worth it or ist it too much hassle? I saw the zen 8gb for $100 so figured I'd chance it.

I simply transfered all my music from the zen to my XP computer using the creative tool, then I downloaded and installed the firmware. From there I simply synched all the music back onto the zen the same way i moved it to the computer. It took a little while, but it wasn't difficult or tedious and now it works with my Vista computer and I just use WMP to sync it.

If you want to get the update direct from Creative, here's how: 1. Go to Creative's support site: http://support.creative.com/ 2. Click 'MP3 Players' 3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click the 'if your product is not listed' link 4. Click 'Zen' in column one 5. Click 'Zen Micro' in column two 6. Don't click anything click anything in column three; just click 'next' 7. Click 'View all Downloads' at the bottom of the list 8. Look for 'Creative Zen Micro PlaysForSure Firmware update 2.21.02' It is listed under 'Firmware' 9. Accept the license agreement. Godsdamn!

For anyone who is having a hard time finding the correct firmware update on Creative's site (because I sure did), you can download it from softpedia, here: http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/FIRMWARE/Creative/Creative-Zen-Micro-PlaysForSure-Firmware-22102.shtml I think it must be region-free, because I'm in Europe, and it works fine on mine. Luckily I had a laptop with XP on it with which to install it. What a hassle. Remember to back up your files before you install the firmware.

Once you get Vista to recognise it, you can use Windows Media Player or Winamp to send music to Zen Micros
