There are thousands of people every year who dream of writing a novel. Most of them remain in that dream state while others put a little more effort into the idea. They may write the first few pages of their story, maybe even the first few chapters. Unfortunately however a vast majority of people stop there, they never even make it halfway through their first novel because of discouragement, boredom with the story, or just downright laziness.

Writing a novel takes certain qualities that the aspiring writer must have, or else they will end up with half a dozen partly finished stories that never even make it to a publishing agency. If you are one of those people and are looking for some information, advice, or inspiration for your story you've come to the right place. Let's take a look at the five things you need to write a novel.

1. Time Management

If you are a first time author you obviously aren't making any money from your book yet. So in order to actually get your first book finished and into print you will need to find a way to do so while making a living as well. Unless of course you are one of those fortunate writers who have someone else to pay for all their needs, giving you all the time in the world to write.

For most of us however this is not the case at all. Most first time writers do in fact have other jobs to supplement their income while they pen their novel. So time management is extremely important. You have to be able to get home from work and afterward balance your family and friends, and then make time to write every single day. I highly suggest writing every day as much as you can, as doing so will not only keep you motivated but improve your skill dramatically.

Once you can learn to manage your time effectively, and are chipping away at your story a little bit at a time, you will start getting excited as the chapters fall away into memories. Without time management however, the story you so passionately love may never be read by anyone other than yourself.

2. Determination

Takeaways
  • If you are a first time author you obviously aren't making any money from your book yet.
  • Think of your own unique story, be creative and add something different.
  • I find that the best time for me is between nine and twelve at night.
