As soon as an immigrant has been granted Permanent Resident status in America they may wonder whether they need to carry their new Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) with them. After all, they will want to guard this important document from theft and damage. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to obtain a Permanent Resident Card, which is why new immigrants often shy away from carrying this valuable document with them wherever they go.

These are valid concerns. It is understandable that a new immigrant will want to keep their Permanent Resident Card safe. It is more than just a credit card sized document stating their legal right to live and work in America. It is one of the most important travel documents they will need to display when exiting and re-entering America, alongside their passport. Without a Permanent Resident Card, an immigrant will find it extremely difficult to re-enter the country and prove that they have taken up legal residence.

However, many immigrants may not be aware of the fact that it is a legal requirement for Permanent Residents to carry their Permanent Resident Card with them at all times. If and only when a Permanent Residence chooses to become a naturalised citizen of America will they relinquish their Permanent Resident Card and no longer have to carry it with them. Under the "Now that you are a Permanent Resident" heading on the USCIS web site, it states: "The Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551, is issued to all Permanent Residents as evidence of alien registration and their Permanent status in the US. The card must be in your possession at all times."

Carrying your Permanent Resident Card with you means you will be able to easily prove to new employers that you are eligible to work legally in America. Presenting a Social Security Card along with your passport will not be considered sufficient proof of your eligibility.

Takeaways
  • Many immigrants are afraid of losing or having their Permanent Resident Card stolen
  • Permanent Resident Cards are proof of legal residence and the right to work in America
  • USCIS law states that every Permanent Resident should carry their Permanent Resident Card on them
Did You Know?
Make photocopies of your Permanent Resident Card and leave these at home in case you lose or have your Permanent Resident Card stolen; it can be replaced

Thank you for sharing your experience, Dulce Maria, but I prefer to carry my Green Card with me. It is the law, after all. Making a photocopy is certainly worthwhile. Sophie

DO NOT CARRY YOUR GREEN CARD WITH YOU I use to do it I a few weeks ago I was mugged at the door of my apartment. Now it is going to cost me about $400 to replace it. If you are a legal resident, surely you are a decent person, you are not walking on the streets looking like you are up to something wrong or suspicious, you avoid doing stupid things while driving. If you are a decent a civil human being then why should anybody question your immigration status? I have never had the need to comfront the police, because I am a decent person and now I am victim for this arbitrary law. Besides, there is no way to flag a greencard, talk about immigration law and enforcement! and can't even report your greencard being stolen with the department of justice and naturalization. Want good advice? Make a photocopy of your greencard and carry that. You know when your employer will request the document and he can wait for you to provide it.

I agree with you, Josie. I carry mine with me every time I leave the house. It's a legal requirement, after all. Sophie

You are so right...I remember carrying mine everytime when I was still a greencard holder. I even went back for it one day when I forgot it, I realized I did not have it almost close to the place I used to work, I just did not want to risk not having it so I decided to return home. It is a security to carry it at all times- for your own peace of mind.

I sort of liken it to the req to carry a passport all the time when traveling- a technical requirement. Most people use judgment about when and where it might be needed. After all, the penalty for failing to carry a green card if you have one is not going to be summary deportation.
