The first step in making any room seem bigger is to clear out the clutter. Even a small amount of clutter can make a small room feel full and confining. You should get rid of anything that doesn't need to be in the room to make the most of your space. You don't need to get rid of all your decorations or nick-knacks, but it is a good idea to limit yourself to just a few of your very favorites in order to keep from overwhelming the room.

Once you have cleared out all your clutter you can begin working to implement decorating techniques that will trick the eye and create an illusion of more space. The first thing that will help a room to look larger is using a light paint color. Lighter shades of paint create a feeling of openness and will make the room feel bigger, while darker colors of paint will make the room feel small and cave-like.

Mirrors are one of the most effective ways to make a room look bigger. You should consider placing either a large dresser mirror or several smaller mirror panels directly across from the entryway to the room. The reflection in the mirrors will give your small room the illusion of more depth and space and will help to make it feel less confined.

Windows create an illusion of extra space in a room. If you already have windows in your room you should either use light, sheer window coverings, or else pull your window coverings back to allow light in. If you don't have a window in your room you may want to consider adding one. It is not overly expensive to do and you can really get a lot of visual bang for your buck. Even if your room is not located on an outside wall of your home you can add a window that looks into another room to expand the room visually. This works particularly well between a living room and dining room or a dining room and kitchen.
