While it is unfortunate, many high school and college students rely on popular myths to help them choose a major and a career. Computer programming is no exception, as there are many myths surrounding what computer programmers do, as well as the type of person suited for a career in computer programming. Fortunately, as with most myths, they are largely untrue, and can be addressed.

One long-standing myth is that girls and women are not suited to become computer programmers due to an inherent lack or ability. Those who perpetuate this myth are most likely unaware of Ada Byron, the woman who collaborated with Charles Babbage on his Analytic Engine until its completion in 1842, is considered to be the world's first computer programmer. Recent research tracking students from seventh grade through high school shows that the achievement gap in math and science between boys and girls is narrowing, and it is happening far too quickly to be caused by biological differences. Fewer women play computer and video games, take computer science courses and go into computing careers because they have come to believe the myth that computer programming jobs mean sitting behind big screens for endless hours, tinkering with computer programs.

This leads to the second myth: that computer programmers simply sit in front of a computer coding all day, unwilling or unable to interact with other people. In fact, computer programmers are required to communicate well, work in groups, and think in interdisciplinary ways - all skills that demand human interaction. Furthermore, because new computer systems and applications have become so enormous, it is not possible for one person to develop them by themselves, working alone.
