With the recent news of Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick, dog fighting and pit bulls are on the top of people's minds. But what about your own neighborhoods? What if you found out that in the city you live in, this goes on? What if it was even WORSE? That is what I have recently learned here in my own area.

With the recent news of Atlanta Falcons QB Michael Vick, dog fighting and pit bulls are on the top of people's minds. The inhumane treatment of these animals along with their demise has been a sad look at this athlete and those involved. But it seems so far away-the multi-million dollar athlete does it, and he is an evil, get away with it type of character. But what about the others in your own neighborhoods? What if you found out that in the very city you live in, this goes on? What if it was even WORSE than what Michael Vick was doing? That is what I have recently learned here in my own area.

In the central city of downtown Toledo, Ohio there was a shocking discovery made today. A police officer, chasing a perpetrator through a central city/downtown neighborhood, was distracted by a teen sitting on a porch. Since school should be in, she inquired and found the house to have the front door ajar. The discovery she made was shocking. In this house, the officer found nearly a dozen viscous pit bulls. These dogs, some chained with large, heavy chains wrapped around their neck, were loose and locked in various areas of the home. Each dog was reported to have scars on their bodies and faces. There was also an installed fighting pit in the home for the dogs. But this was not the most shocking revelation. That came in the discovery of 5 young children also in the home.

Inside the home, there were 4 siblings and another child. The age range of these unattended little children is between 2 months old and 9 years old. The mother arrived shortly after, and was arrested. The police also made another shocking discovery-a loaded shotgun in the room next to the children, out in the open. This news has left many in my community shocked and disgusted about the events that unfolded today.

Drives home the point that people who fight and/or abuse animals have no place in society and we must start seriously cracking down on animal fighting. Everyone suffers because of them .. dogs, children, spouses, neighbors.

Great article! So sad for those children! I cannot believe a loaded gun was within their reach, either. Crazy!

It's going on around you! And the only way to stop it is to report these situations, to the authorities and the media.

This has been going on for years. All the publicity now because of Michael Vick. What I don't like is that the pitbulls pay for this as being labeled aggressive or violent dogs by the media and other uninformed people. It's been time to put an end to dog fighting and mislabeling pitbulls as vicious animals. They are mostly vicious because of what is done to them by those involved in dog fighting.

This "sport" is dangerous for everyone. It is probably going on in many areas where local residents have no idea. Great article.

Such a good thing for the children that the police officer decided to inquire at the house. She could have easily just walked on past the home. It's so sad that the children are the ones that must bear the consequences of a parent's bad choices.

poor communities across this country need serious revitalisation, what the hell is going on? when the only way for people to support their families is to raise and sell vicious dogs?? stop spending our countries resourses on a foolish war and start investing it right here, where its desperately needed!

Great article! I am sure there are so many places where these things happen but when they are close to home it makes it harder to hear.
