It doesn't take a lot to realize that a major part of healthy living is healthy eating. However, many often forget that good nutrition plays an important part in almost everything we do. This is especially true for any athlete who hopes to maximize their performance at a particular sport. For almost any runner, the proper balance of food and exercise is needed to stay in the best physical shape possible. Running can be an incredibly demanding sport. Of course, it was to be ranked, the most crucial element to becoming a better running is training and practice. However, coming up a close second is good nutrition. Eating the proper foods, and doing it in a reasonable amount will definitely yield noticeable gains over a period of time.

Carbohydrates are very important for runners. They should be the primary energy source in any diet. However, at the same time it is also very important not to flood your body with an excessive amount of carbohydrates. For the healthiest balance, carbohydrates should provide about 70% of your energy needs, give or take a little. Luckily, carbohydrates are fairly easy to come by, and eating a fair share of breads, grains, cereals and so on. Remember, though, your body also gets energy from other sources, so there is no need to overdose on carbohydrates, which can lead to unhealthy habits and actually hurt over time.

Although most would tend to value protein very highly as an energy source, most research shows that it should only be about 10% or so of your diet. Although some would disagree with such a statement, it really is best to stay right around the 10% mark in order to also give your body room to process the other essential nutrients and food groups that are required for getting the best nutrition possible.
