Listen closely. Shh. Hear that sound? That is the distressing sound that Yogi Berra knows all too well, and so should you by now. That is the sound of deja vu all over again. All Americans have heard this sound before. It is the sound of George W. Bush being allowed to let his particular brand of paranoid schizophrenia destroy lives and snag the forward progress of history in a temporary but excruciatingly painful bear trap. The first time this happened Americans by the tens of millions refused to pay attention to the delusion ramblings of a mentally unbalanced man solely because that man's 1040 form lists his occurpation as President of the United States. The result was...well, you know.

That was then, however, and this is now. Or is it? Why, Mr. Peabody, I do believe we have jumped into the Wayback Machine. How else to explain why we are hearing Pres. Bush again acting like Wyatt Earp-a very apt analogy as Earp was another coward who talked big while safely protected from retribution from within a large cone of protection far away from any real threat. "Iran's pursuit of technology that could lead to nuclear weapons threatens to put a region already known for instability and violence under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust." Those words are from late August 2007 but they may as well be late 2001 or all of 2002. Just exchange Iran for Iraq and there is really no difference at all. (The only real difference is that the instability in the Middle East that Bush speaks of wasn't there when he was rattling his sabers against Iraq and are there now only because...he invaded Iraq.)

Even as a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan I do agree with most of your feelings on this. We completely lost focus and took our eye off the ball by going to Iraq. Yes, Saddam was a ruthless dictator but like you said the man that kicked off the "War on Terrorism" in warp drive was Usama. There is a torrid history of us in the Mid-East and some will say that the current war started as far back as 1979 but what about our muddling in Iran's political affairs back in the 50's? Starting a war with Iran would definitely lead to a war much larger than anyone can imagine and many will not feel safe in their homes back in America. Is this because of Iran being so powerful? No.. it is because of old enemies like Russia and China will pounce on us once we are weak. Bad enough our troops are stretched thin and we don't have the large military of old.
