DEEP RIVER - On Main Street, spirits of a different variety are being proposed for a former funeral home. Kenneth Alsback, a business partner of Shore Discount Liquors, said he submitted an application to the town's Planning and Zoning Commission in order to relocate his business into the former Swan Funeral Home at 211 Main Street.
Alsback said the liquor store has been a tenant in the Deep River Shopping Center, which is anchored by Adam's Supermarket at 195 Main Street, since 1988.
Relocating the liquor store from its current 5,000-square-foot home to the former funeral home would allow it to become about 25 percent larger.
The larger space, Alsback said, would allow the store to better display wines and allow additional space for wine tastings.
Shore Discount Liquor's sister store opened in 1990 in Clinton, at 94 West Main Street in the Shaw's Plaza, is approximately the same size as the current Deep River store.
While the former funeral home is 3,412 square feet, Alsback is proposing to create a 3,720-square-foot addition to the south and east sides of the building with a full basement resulting in a total of 7,132 square feet.
According to blueprints by PDS Engineering and Construction of Bloomfield, the addition would create a new entrance to the building on the east side with an entrance canopy, windows, and vinyl siding.
It would also include timber framed windows and paneling on the building's south and north sides with vinyl siding installed on the east side.
The existing brick, windows, and canopy will remain on the building's west side, which faces Main Stree,t along with the current vinyl siding on the building's south side.
Blueprints also show the driveway on the south side of the building and curb area would be removed and replaced with plantings.
A sole driveway would exist on the building's north side leading 29 parking spaces.
Plans show a silt fence would be installed along a portion of the south side of the building and on the east side near Main Street.
