You walk over to let your dog or cat inside and you let him back out as quick as he came in. He's been sprayed by a skunk. What are you supposed to do now? You hang your head with frustration, but don't worry, you will get rid of that smell! You will need to go outside and take a good look at your pet. If you are about to go to work you may have to call off of work and if you can't afford to you will need to lock your dog or cat up while you are gone. You will need to take a good look at your dog or cat and his behavior. If your dog is scratching and rubbing his face you will need to take the dog to the vet so that he or she can prescribe you some soothing ointment to help with the irritation. Your dog or cat's face may be red, irritated or swollen.

If your dog isn't scratching at his face or rubbing his face now you will need to keep an eye on the dog or cat for the next week to make sure that his face isn't irritated. Now that you know the shape that your dog or cat is in, you will need to try and get rid of the smell. Realize that most skunks will hit your dog or cat with spray right in the face because your dog is always facing the rear end of the skunk, chasing it. You will need to get rid of this horrid smell. You can try to soak the dog or cat in tomato juice to try and reduce the smell somewhat. Then you will want to use 1 tablespoon of dish soap, a cup of baking soda and some hydrogen pyroxide to get rid of the strench. Now you can clean the dog or cat up with shampoo and rinse everything off.
