Crystal is the mother of a young child who was diagnosed with autism when he was only 20 months old. Every time I would see Crystal, she would tell me about the new things they were trying and update me on how her son, Hayden, was doing. One day I met Hayden and my heart just went out to him. A little boy should never have to go through all the troubles his body is dealing with. After they found out exactly what was causing all of Hayden's symptoms, they were crushed. It turned out to be mercury poisoning, most likely from his vaccination shots.

I recently interviewed Crystal, and this is her heart-felt story:

April: "What did you do before you had your son?"

Crystal: "I was an elementary school teacher. I taught for five years in the public school system."

April "Did the doctors ever see any abnormalities in your son when he was born or during any of his check-ups done before his vaccinations?"

Crystal: "Hayden had acid reflux for the first several months of life, but it was nothing that the doctor was concerned about. Except for the reflux, he was given a clean bill of health from birth on. He was healthy and showed no abnormalities anytime before he started regressing. He met all his milestones up until about 18 months. At this point, he did not develop the language that a normal child his age would use."

April "After your son was vaccinated what changed? What did you notice was different about him?"

Crystal : "He was vaccinated several times and we didn't notice anything other than what a "normal" reaction would be. He often became fussy and ran a fever. As time went on, I noticed more and more things about him that I did not feel were normal, but the doctors assured me there was nothing wrong. When he was a baby, he didn't sleep well. He was up about four times a night, did not want to sleep laying down, and had to be elevated, rocked, or carried around most of the time."

April: "At what point did you take him to go get checked out and tested?"

I really would be scared about having my kids vaccinated today! Great article. Very very sad.

Great article. I have an autistic son who never had a vaccine in his life. There are multiple causes, and people should be made aware of all known ones. Good interview.

Great article! As a mom of an 8 month old boy, I appreciate reading things like this when trying to make important decisions regarding vaccinations. :)

Oh, and I've heard some people argue that we only see these increasing rates of autism because someone changed the definition of autism, and I think that is a load of crap. I don't think anyone said, "Oh, let's change the disease definition so we can make more money." I think we have just come to a better understanding of what is developmentally appropriate at what ages.

That said, I would not tell people to not vaccinate their kids at all. Until we understand whether there IS a genetic tendency to be more susceptible, if a whole lot of people stopped vaccinating their kids we *would* be at risk for more epidemics. But I totally agree that we need to change the way we vaccinate our kids. It's just really hard to do because doctors WILL bully you. I at least was able to delay my daughter's Hep B vaccination with no problem until she was about two months old. Something needs to be done, though, about doctors who won't even listen to your side of things if you want to do things a little differently.

I don't think autism is a genetic epidemic but have heard an interesting idea that there are genetic patterns that make one more susceptible--not defects, just variations--and that they show up more often now because reproductive patterns have changed. Really smart people are more likely to marry one another now because they tend to work in closer proximity and some folks think they are more likely to have autistic kids. I am not sure how much I agree. I also know there's more mercury in the environment than there used to be, which may be a more plausible explanation. continued...

I tried to send this to a family member and it has been sent already. Glad the news is getting out. Thank you for the article.

As a service to truth, as one commenter put it, there IS discrepancy and disagreement on the science that claims vaccines are not a part of or one cause of autism. It is also not a fact that mercury has been "banned", it was removed voluntarily over quite a LONG period of time (taking care to use up all stock so not a penny was lost). Doctors were never advised to toss mercury batches out and used them up. AND it IS still used in smaller trace amounts (how smart is it to use any amount of something toxic and accumulative?) AND it was never removed from flu vaccines (which are recommended for pregnant women and children) as well as Rhogam (a shot specifically for pregnant women with a type of blood disorder, to put it briefly). Though some manufacturers are now making Rhogam thimersol free. Kudos to Crystal for sharing her story!

Wonderful article!!! My son was also damaged by a vaccine...although not the typical MMR and he does not have autism. He has brain damage caused by seizures brought on by a DPT shot. Vaccines are terrible and they harm alot of children. Kudos to you for sharing this story.

awesome article. We are working on going GFCF right now with my son.

....(continued from previous post) this theory has been tested and proven that there is no connection. I wouldn't feel very comforted by these "studies" if they were done by the very drug companies who provide them, or by companies or the government who are connected to the pharmaceutical industry. I am just a parent stating an opinion, and hoping that someone out there can be helped as much as my child has. Think what you want to about autism. In the meantime, I will continue to see my child improve from the things that you contradict. My advice is to do your research and go with what your heart tells you. Don't trust my research or anyone else's. Until you live the life of an autism parent, please don't judge others who are doing the best they can with the cards that they've been dealt. For those of you who supported this article, thank you and good luck!

I would like to add that we have had all the genetic tests done on my son that were recommended by his developmental pediatrician who diagnosed him. All of them came back normal. I am not searching for somebody to blame. I am the first to admit that these children probably suffer from weakened immune systems, as many auto-immune problems run in our family. However, I refuse to believe that if my son had not been plowed by environmental factors such as vaccines, chemicals in our foods, and a whole other array of toxins we meet everyday, that we would be in the same position that we are today. Children are not the same, and that's why some kids are thrown into autism from the shots and some go on to develop normally. If this is the case, why shouldn't vaccines be taken more seriously and not be given by the same schedule for every child? Also, I'm not sure I've ever heard mention of an autism/vaccine connection in the "media" besides on Oprah last week. Please show me proof where

If autism is 'passed down' how is the rate increasing so fast? Think about it. Humans would be mutating in front of your eyes. There is NO such thing as a genetic epidemic. That isn't scientifically possible. So, it makes sense to think that kids are genetically predisposed but there must be an environmental trigger. What drives me nuts is people that don't even live with a child with ASD having opinions on what did or did not cause autism. You need to listen to mothers that live with it and saw their child change. I am one of them and I agree with Crystal 110%.
