After Maria Sharapova became the second youngest female to win Wimbledon in 2004 there has been a lot of pressure on her to win Grand Slams. It wasn't until the US Open two and a half years later that she finally won her second Grand Slam. This year Maria Sharapova tries to add her name to the list of female tennis players with multiple US Open Singles titles. Here are the other female tennis players with multiple singles titles at the US Open.

Monica Seles (1991, 1992)
Monica Seles is widely known as the tennis player that was stabbed before a match in 1993 but prior to that she was dominating women's tennis. In 1991 and 1992 Monica Seles won 18 singles titles including the Australian Open, French Open and US Open in both years. In 1991 Monica Seles defeated four time US Open Champion Martina Navratilova and in 1992 she defeated Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. Monica Seles made a great comeback in August of 1995 and reached the US Open Finals two more times but lost both times to Steffi Graf.

Tracy Austin (1979, 1981)
Tracy Austin came onto the scene breaking all sorts of age records. In 1977 Tracy Austin became the youngest player to ever win a pro tournament when she won at the age of 14. Two years later Tracy Austin defeated Chris Evert in the Finals of the US Open to become the youngest US Open Champion. Tracy Austin would win the US Open again in 1981, this time beating Martina Navratilova, but she wouldn't win another Grand Slam after that.

Serena Williams (1999, 2002)
Serena Williams finished ranked in the top 20 for the first time in 1998 and continued her climb in 1999 when she won her first Grand Slam at the 1999 US Open. Serena Williams was the first African-American US Open Champion since Althea Gibson in 1958. Serena Williams wouldn't win another Grand Slam until 2002 but she won three out of four Grand Slams that year, all against her older sister Venus Williams.

Takeaways
  • Steffi Graf won all four Grand Slams on four different occasions.
  • Both of the Williams sisters have won the US Open twice.
  • Chris Evert went to the Semi-Finals or farther in 52 out of the 56 Grand Slams she went to.

Great article. I have only seen a few of the matches, and missed the one where Serena played Justine Henin. However, there was a woman who recently became the first person from Israel (I think thats what they said, as I was multi-tasking while watching the match) to win at the US Open. That was a good match.
