Nothing says home like living with a stranger in a small space with yellowing walls and a cold tile floor, right? Kidding! Don't fret. Here are some of my suggestions for a cozy (and fun!) semester in your new home away from home:

1. Lighting

Fluorescent lighting is not exactly relaxing, is it? Floor lamps, table lamps and desk lamps help create reduced lighting that is easier on the eyes. In addition, strings of holiday lights bordering windows and battery operated candles are nice to use as night lights.

2. Color

Adding bright colors to your room is important to help offset the dull colors of the walls and furniture. Decorate your walls with posters, pictures and art. I use 3M Command Hooks and Mounting Strips to hang stuff on my walls because they come off easily leaving no damages behind. I also add a bit of color to my dorm with bright blankets, throw pillows and an area rug. The area rug doesn't need to reach every corner of the room either. One that is big enough to fill most of the open floor space is fine. Who needs a rug under their bed and dresser anyway?

3. Sustenance

If your college allows it, take a mini-fridge (and possibly a microwave.) The cafeteria will not be open 24/7, so a stash of various foods and drinks is essential for late-night studying and missed breakfasts. I also suggest stocking your mini-fridge with bottled water because who knows how healthy dorm tap water is... ick!

4. Organization

Organization is necessary in such a small space that is shared with another person. Stackable bins, extra hooks, and over-the-door organizers keep the room tidy and looking spacious. Desk organizers like filing trays also keep your life organized and on track.

5. Comfort

Seating for yourself and others helps make a dorm more comfortable to live in. Something that really bugged me was when my friends came into my room and made themselves at home on my bed. But where else did I expect them to sit when all I had was one desk chair? Futons and folding chairs are somewhat inexpensive and prevent friends from settling in personal spaces.
