Situated along the Greenbrier River, Watoga State Park is an excellent location to take advantage of many of the outdoor activities in the region. Fishing for smallmouth bass and trout are excellent in the Greenbrier River. Although the river is not particularly deep in this area, the river is wide and the current is swift and is better suited for teens and adults to fish. The river is ideal for fly fishers. A small lake is available in the park to fish in as well. The lake holds easily caught bluegill and largemouth bass among other species. Paddle and row boats are available seasonally to rent. Hunting is permitted in many federal and state lands located nearby. Check with the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources for more information. Many local businesses offer goods and services to sportsman. For those unable to provide their own dinner the park does offer a nice restaurant.
Watoga State Park offers the standard park game courts (basketball, tennis, volleyball, etc.) as well as a pool. There are numerous hiking trails throughout the park. More experienced hikers may visit the nearby Greenbrier River Trail that follows the river. A converted railroad track makes for a level walking surface, but its 77 miles provides ample room to challenge the endurance of anyone. Mountain Biking is also allowed on the trail. Cross Country skiing is permitted as well. The trail passes through many tunnels, over many bridges, and is surrounded by privately owned land, please be cautious and courteous to others.
The park offers two campgrounds for tents and trailers. One campground is located along the river. Each site is provided a picnic table and grills. Some sites offer electricity. Central toilet, laundry, and shower facilities are located at each campground. The campgrounds are open into December to accommodate hunters. The park also offers over 30 cabins for those seeking more substantial housing during their visit. The cabins are available year around.
