When I say the words food and sex drive in the same sentence, most would probably assume I am talking about sensual body butters, chocolate sauces or whipped cream applied to the body, but no. I’m talking about regular old food – the kind you find in the refrigerator on a daily basis. The kind you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What does food have to do with sex then, you may ask? Simple. Certain foods, found or easily incorporated into our everyday diets, can improve every aspect of our sex drive. Research shows that many foods affect not only our senses, which can evoke sexual or erotic notions, but our bodies physically as well. So, what foods should we be eating in order to maintain a healthy sex drive?

We eat with all of our senses, our eyes first. So, often just the visual of a certain food is enough to kick up the sex drive. Foods like carrots, bananas and asparagus have been likened to the male genitalia. The phallic nature of the foods themselves is thought to evoke sensuality, therefore upping the sex drive.

Similarly, figs and oysters have been compared to the female genitalia and also are commonly thought to arouse ideas over dinner.

We also experience food with our sense of smell. Certain foods are linked to an increased sex drive simply because of the way they smell. Vanilla, truffles and almond are three examples of food or extracts that affect our sex drive through our noses. Just a whiff of one is thought to get the juices flowing.

Obviously, we experience food with our tastes, but not only our taste buds. Textures of foods, along with flavor, can enhance the sensual mood and also the sex drive. Foods with creamy textures, such as avocados and honey can increase sexual desire and sex drive simply with their textures. Juicy fruits such as strawberries and raspberries are not only linked to sex drive for their flavor, but are two foods that our often linked to romance. What romance novel is complete without a glass of champagne and chocolate covered berries? And what romance novel have you read that lacks in sex drive?
