A Look into PortConMaine
Maine's Yearly Summer Anime Convention
Embed:
"PortConMaine" is an anime convention that has been active since 2002 as it's held every summer in South Portland, Maine. I had never known that there was an annual convention in Maine until I have heard about PortConMaine. It's a bit surprising because it's in Maine where you hardly hear about anything going on in that state on the news. Not much tends to happen in Maine which is why the Bush family had moved to that state from Texas. Over the years, they have a somewhat sizable growth of attendees but nothing that big due to the location. Excluding Alaska, Maine is at the northern most let alone northeastern most tip of the United States. It's Maine's largest anime convention which isn't surprising because one doesn't hear about any type of anime or gaming convention taking place in that state. Not many groups would bring an event to Maine due to the low attendance. Realistically, not many people would head to Maine for an anime convention. A bit surprisingly, it's the longest-running anime convention in New England as it has a head start by one year over "Anime Boston".
Due to the location, it's the eastern-most anime convention in the United States. If anybody looks at a map of the United States, one can look at where Maine is located and agree with that fact.
Despite PortConMaine running a bit longer than Anime Boston, it hasn't experienced the large sizable growth that the latter has gone through in a matter of years. However, it seems that it's a good thing that PortConMaine exists as it brings attention to the state of Maine; at the same time, it brings something for the residents of Maine that enjoy playing videogames and watching Japanese anime.
PortConMaine 2002 was held at the University of Southern Maine around April. It was a pretty small convention as under three hundred people had attended the convention. One can say that the attendance is pretty low. The attendance is pretty low but one must consider where Maine is on the map.
