Let's face the facts: Most of us do not enjoy watching television commercials on the television. We take the necessary time-out to fill our drinks, use the facilities, or call Aunt Mable and find out how her surgery procedure went. Ads are loud, contain bright colors and distractions, attempt humor (and usually fail) and succeed in getting our half-hearted attention. Otherwise, they would have ceased to exist long ago. Watching a TV movie will create so many gaps in the plot that you often wonder why you did not just queue the movie in the first place.

Anybody who initiates their Real Media player is discovering that commercials now exists in the form of streaming media. There is no escaping them; from pop-ups on your Dell computer to billboards cutting the landscape of your local interstate highway, whatever the technology or scenery, ads are here to stay. Billion dollar corporations, as well as local start-up businesses, would not want it any other way.

But now, comes a new perspective on ads. What if viewing an ad actually contained a benefit? What if, in some meager way, you were compensated for your time to actually view an ad on-line? Imagine the business model: Proctor and Gamble, for example, can create a streaming on-line ad regarding their new Tide laundry detergent. Proctor and Gamble agree to pay the website a certain amount to post their ad on this site. Thousands of people can view it, and actually want to view it. But why would the common shlub, myself included, want to? Well, how about if you were promised your favorite magazine subscription for agreeing to view the ad? How about a reward system that guarantees you a free year of selected magazines, just so you can watch a couple of ads? Ten minutes of your spare time can actually translate into a free year? You bet!
