Gift tags with adhesive backing are really a waste of money. Sure, they're decorative, and they're an easy and convenient way to label gifts, especially during the holidays, but they aren't necessary. You can create homemade gift tags that are more impressive than store-bought gift tags, and you can make these homemade substitutes for a fraction of the cost. Homemade gift tags are far more appealing and make any gift look like a million bucks. Next time you need gift tags for any occasion, consider the following instructions for creating homemade tags. The recipients of your gifts will be pleasantly surprised, and you'll save money while having the satisfaction of creating and embellishing homemade tags.

Greeting Card Recycling

Days before Christmas a few years ago, I ran out of store-bought gift tags, and I didn't want to buy more. I only had a handful of gifts left to wrap, and I couldn't see making a special trip to the store. I didn't want to create a homemade gift tag made from wrapping paper scraps, and I wanted gift tags that added something special to the gifts I still had to wrap. While looking at the Christmas cards I had received in the past couple of weeks, I had creative idea. I decided I would cut out the graphics on the cards and turn them into homemade gift tags.

I cut out snowflakes covered in iridescent glitter, lighthouses, snowmen, bright red cardinals, and anything else that looked like it would make a good homemade gift tag. I also cut out phrases to add to gifts that would give them a little more interest and appeal. Before long I had a sandwich bag full of homemade cutouts that looked better than the set I had purchased.

Embellishing Tags

I embellished homemade gift tags that could use a little more pizzazz by gluing on iridescent glitter and tiny seed beads. I also tied them to bulky or unusual shaped gifts with narrow satin ribbons by punching a small hole in the top with a hole puncher. My homemade gift tags looked stunning, and I was glad I decided to recycle holiday cards rather than buy more of the boring self-adhesive variety that weren't exactly cheap.

Wow, I love this idea. I have seen unused bags of greeting cards at the thrift store for cheap!

I love this. I never buy gift tags. These will look a bit better than a name scrawled across a package in permanent marker, huh?

Great article. I've been making homemade gift cards using my computer, but I like your idea better; more texture and more homemade looking.
