At $1,000, Darth Vader Costume is the Mother of All Halloween Getup
Star Wars has long been a source of inspiration for Halloween costumes since those innocent days when cheapo-plastic Darth Vader masks could be found situated between a a leather-jacketed Fonzie and a Charlie's Angel, when you opened the door to hand out Marathon Bars and Zotz candies on October 31, 1977. Well, it's thirty years later, and the cost of gasoline has risen by several thousand percent, or so it seems, anyway. So why shouldn't there be a Darth Vader costume that will set you back $1,000?
This Darth Vader costume is truly the mother of all Halloween costumes - perhaps the single greatest costume ever created for the semi-average person to wear. By that I mean, sure, Bill Gates could hire one of the members of the legendary Westmore family to make him look like, well, somebody close to being cool, but for most Americans the best we can ever hope for is a Halloween costume that costs $1,000. Obviously, most of us cannot afford even this-I know I can't (or so I must keep convincing myself)-but at least the majority of Americans could afford to add it to their ever-increasing credit debt.
Okay, so what makes a Darth Vader Halloween costume worth $1,000? Nothing, obviously, but here is what you get that makes it almost worth that much. You get an actual latex mask and gauntlets. A jumpsuit that is made of quilted fake leather. And I mean high quality fake leather, not that crappy stuff. Molded armor pieces that were actually cast from the original Revenge of the Sith production molds. You also get the collar and should guards, as well as Darth Vader's chest computer and even something that is almost, but not quite, a codpiece. Oh, and gloves and the famous Darth Vader helmet.

I'd like to see the sweat on that person who wears that while trekking through neighborhoods all night. I remember wearing simple latex masks when trick-or-treating...and usually sweat a bucket on the inside of the mask before even getting home. But then, maybe this Darth Vader costume has a little fan inside that also stands in for the breathing device. That's what seems to be missing on this costume...despite most people with a deep timbre able to sound somewhat like James Earl Jones. I guess you could do that breathing thing while talking...but I've seen people attempt that and end up turning blue in the face.
Goes to show how much Halloween, which I never celebrated--even as a child, is getting to be the "next Christmas" with advertising and promotional stuff designed to part fools and their money.
